Your cost estimate sounds about right for someone who wants to preserve the beast, rather than run it down. I have hit the $12k in the 2 1/2 years I've owned the car - that's about $1 for every mile I have driven. This includes maintenance, repairs, adjustments, and tires, but not gas, registration and insurance.

I guess I better make you feel good.

I've owned my car for close to 2 months now. I've put about 2,000 miles on it. It's fun crossing the state of Texas twice in a weekend, honestly!

I've crossed the $1,000 mark, and expect to cross the 2,000 mark by Christmass. I've yet to get to the cosmetic stuff, like motor mounts, or air conditioning, the flacky tach, or the non retracting radio antina to name a few.

Even though I'm an inexperenced wrench, I do all the work myself. It takes me longer, but I do it right. I buy my parts of the cheapest supply I can find. I have to chose between the Big Three, a Houston import parts company called BAP GEON, and the local auto parts store. I figure my time is worth 8.50 an hour, because thats what I get payed at work. I've put in quite a few hours. More than I'll say.

I've ben abandoned on the side of the road once, by a striped t-belt. I don't trust the car again, yet.

If that doesn't make you feel better about the price you've payed, nothing will.

Greg, the first 2 years I owned my GT, I sunk about $16K into it. The PO's motto apparently was " if it ain't broke, don't replace it". He had no wear items replaced at all, only repairs when something failed. (which really was not that often) I started out with all the heavy stuff, such as: timing belt & water pump, motor mounts & oil pan gasket, clutch & associated components, shifter ball cup, all radiator/heater hoses & coolant tank, lots of vacuum hoses, new upper A arms, lower ball joints, tie rod ends, steering rack bushings & boots, etc... Then I started doing the things that I WANTED to do, such as: 18" wheels/tires (X2 because the first set got trashed), headers & custom exhaust, cross drilled rotors, sway bar "steroid" links all the way around, poly front swaybar bushings, RRFPR, air/fuel ratio meter, fuel pressure gage, some billet interior goodies, new mat set, Momo wheel, carbon fiber wing & strut brace, etc... Adding in all the tire mounting, alignments, oil changes, tune-ups, etc..., it comes to about $16K (and that's doing 95% of the work myself). BUT, and it's a big BUT, The only things I have done to the car in the past year were: new tires, 3 oil changes, air filter change, replaced the hot water valve, and one used cooling fan, for a grand total of approximately $700.00. During said year, I put approximately 15K miles on it. Very reliable, very comfortable, VERY fast, and this year proved to be very cheap to maintain too. Just about any car will cost you that much to maintain for a year. Even though I have invested alot of money into the car, I don't consider it a money pit. Most of the dollars spent on it were for "want to" things rather than "have to" things. Also, the car has never left me stranded. The only things that have happened were normal wear items, yet not one prevented me from making home to my garage.

I honestly believe that a well cared for, daily driven 928 will be more reliable than a 928 that is a "garage queen" and doesn't get driven enough, or because of it's low annual miles, is not checked/serviced enough. Any rate, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it. LOL.

Chris,

I couldn't agree with you more and think it's great that you have taken the time and expense to bring your shark up to speed. I've also dumped a lot of money into my low mileage 88 S4. About $8,000 in the first few months of ownership simply because the previous owner wasn’t a true shark owner and let things go as your PO did.

But in the long run, my shark will still be cheaper then any new 911, Boxster or most any other new car you could buy or lease today…and…hell of a lot faster tooooooooooo or damn close to it.

I think it’s a solid investment and a great place to spend your money.

Well, I don't know which I should list. The $$$ I have spent so far on parts etc, or the total amount I have spent since ownership to include purchase and maintanance.

In my case it would be easier to give to total amount spent since that happy day in 1998 when my dream came true. I got my shark in December of 98 about two weeks before Christmas. No,it wasn't a present, the timing for the loan etc. just worked out that way. Anyway, I spent $7,000 for the purchase and two months later I spent another $7,500 in Mo Zahr's shop in Witchita to fix it (catastrophic t-belt failure). BTW the 1984 US spec S model IS an interference engine. I also had the typical PO problem. No fires under the hood, so it never went in for repairs or maintainence. Being the uneducated, bitten by the "I finally found a shark in my area (Amarillo at the time) and gotta have it" bug and no PPI, I was stranded on my 5th wedding aniversary on I-40 about 30 miles from anything at night on my way home from work.

So, that brings me to $14,500 at that point. Add the little over $1,200 I have spent on replacing the leaky 18 year old radiator and dried cracked cooling hoses and air intake tubes, and barely there airbox straps. Tack on the $350 for trans hoses, various engine parts that were missing (still have more to replace) etc and I am sitting at approximately $16,050.
I still need brake pads, a spare tire, updated ball joints and a/c repairs to make me feel safe enough to drive it very far. Many many things need to be replaced even after that, but I would have done almost everything the same if I had it to do over again. I am positively in love with my 84S. I would definately gotten a PPI in retrospect and used that as a barganing chip. I talked the owner down from 8500 to 7000 because of a cracked front spoiler and some minor cosmetic flaws. Had I known, I wouldv'e shot for 4000. Anyway, lesson learned and I wouldnt trade my shark for anything (except maybe a 1991 S4 in white with blue leather-like that'll happen) It is safe to say that I will keep my tigershark until the day I take a dirt nap. Now, if I could only fall into a rich relative or something so I can make it concours........

Cool

-I've had mine for 3.5 years now, and have spent right around $19,000 on it. This includes $10.6k purchase price, $3100 for a new interior, $1100 for catalytic converters/Borla exhaust, about $900 for Devek's radiator, a new clutch for $500, about $2000 on rims and tires, and the rest on minor items. I've put about 27k miles on it in that time.

Next up: New paint job, about $5k....

WOW! Starting to look like I have no room to bitch concerning money spent on repairs.

Guys, sadly at your expense, I’m feeling better about my 928 journey.

Wink

Based on about 12 years of 928 ownership, my costs (not including purchase, insurance and gas) have been about $0.25 per mile. If I include everything, then the cost comes closer to $0.928 per mile. That's just my $0.928.

Well thanks Tim. I appreciate that. These wonderful cars of ours are too nice to let go by the wayside, especially an '89 GT. I think it was glad that I bought it, and rescued it from the PO. LOL.

Greg, if you want to add purchase price and all into it, I've got to add another $20K, plus what I've done this year for a grand 3 year total of approximately $38K.(again, most of that was want to stuff) What did I get for my money?? 40,000 plus miles of grinning ear to ear, knowing that I have one of the best cars in the automotive world, and it's modified to my particular tastes. BTW, I got mine for Christmas too. 21st of December!!!

So far I've owned my car for 10 months and put about 8K miles on it with necessary repairs of about $4500 and another 1500 or so of stuff I wanted (mats, shifter, power steering pump). So I'm under the $1 a mile mark, which was what my first year goal was. I'm hoping that the car costs me no more than 5K per year including depreciation.

Chris,

If I do not include the purchase price, my total is only 9050 spent on upkeep and maintainence. I also view my somewhat marred but still pleasant experience as having rescued my shark form it's previous owner. It appears that mine was to be abused by every PO it had. That is, of course, until I ran across it. Funny thing, the brain. When I first set eyes on it, I fell in love. I was initially hoping for a white with blue leather or a dark blue with black leather. Mine is the Gold type color with white leather. A bit of a stretch ya might say. I still love mine as much as the day I drove it home. The ony thing I could see prompting me to get rid of it would be the offer of a 91 S4 in the above colors. I would say she is 100% safe in my garage. Eventually I hope to add a 91 S4 as opposed to upgrade to a S4. The day after I can do it, I'll post here. I wouldn't hold your breath though. I may be able to ride a flying pig before then.

Thumbs down

No Way!!!

Either I have been very lucky, or, Pattycakes has been especially kind to me.

My next foray into cost will be :
T belt
Pump
Idler/Tensioner rebuild
Mirror switch -getting intermittent-
Pod recovering - only one crack , starting to separate-
Trans. filter/service
NEW ALTERNATOR
Polished/coated spyder - like Randy's I hope -
All of the above in the high $1000 to low $2000 range.
I won't do it all at once and some things will be done before others, over time.
With the help of the BTDT crowd I think this is reasonable.
BTW
This post validates that SCM series of articles and Forbes as well.

" All Rollers (150$?)
" Grommets for the Brake Master Cylinder (8$)
" LR CV Joint (167$)

" Drain Plug (")
Fixed Left side audio problem - no output but now the supertuner rocks.
Fixed all oil leaks

Maintenance -

My Shark has just turned 90K miles, when I bought her she had 89K.

On the Repair List -

Body - One minor dent and a few dings.
Air tubes for the Air Intake.

She's come a long way in 13 months and Ive done all the work myself, being that I'm unemployed. Hence the reason why I'm always on the board.

For what Ive got into her, I am more than pleased.
