Custom gear shift indicator
I've been wanting to upgrade from the old fashioned accordion style shift boot to a full leather boot for a while now. There's only been one thing holding me back. Because I have an older 928, there isn't a gear indicator in the pod like in the later models. If I get a full boot, it'll be difficult to determine which gear I'm in. Of course it wouldn't be hard to just memorize how many clicks it takes to put it into drive, reverse, etc. In fact, I already have.
But I want something to modernize my car, while improving its functionality at the same time. What I want to do is set up LEDs underneath the shift plate so that instead of the entire thing lighting up, just the gear that I'm in lights up. So rather than seeing "P R N D 1 2" upon starting up my car...I'd just see "P".
There's only one problem...I don't know how to set it up. I was wondering if anybody else has done this mod or if anybody has any ideas. This might end up being too much work and I'll just have to stay in the dark ages, but I'd really like to do the mod.
Thanks

Casey,
I can tell you how this is set up on the 4 speed transmission. There is a switch that fits under the shift lever on the transmission. A weather proof twist plug fits into the switch and carries the wiring into the spare tire compartment.
Only a switch from an 85 up will work as the 83-84 cars do not have the contacts for all of the shift positions. The wiring on the harness gets a little complex because switch positions are used both to light up the tach lights and to control the backup light relay and the starter lock out. But since the three speed trans has different switches for this you can simply wire things direct.
It will take a little experimenting to determine if the four speed transmission shift lever will fit on the three speed transmission and if the switch will fit under the arm. Only by having a switch in hand will you be able to tell if it will work or if you can adapt the switch to your transmission. The switches are expensive, but you should be able to find a used one. There is a guy on eBay parting out an 86.5 car so you might be able to get one cheap. Get the switch, the trans shift arm and the wiring harness to the spare tire well.
After that it is a simple wiring job and making some LED lights to work. You will need to bring forward one wire for each position. You can just gound the common on the switch in the rear and apply power from the ingnition circuit in the front.
If you are really into making modifications get a late auto tach and wiring harness from the instrument cluster to the center console. Then you will be able to hook the wires from the trans switch to the lights in the Tach and have a front visual for yourself. I really like having the gear positions on the tach right in front of me. Sometimes I am cruising in 2 and forget to put the car in D. With the lights there is no guessing.
Good luck

Here is another alternative - shift indicator light and sender:

Not made for Porsche, but can be adapted to almost anything - I have installed one in a '37 Rolls and another in a '73 450 SL.....

Question on this ... Podguy says "There is a switch that fits under the shift lever on the transmission. A weather proof twist plug fits into the switch and carries the wiring into the spare tire compartment."
If the switch is physically located beneath the shift lever, why did they run the wiring for it all the way back to the spare tire compartment? For the backup lights? I recall getting into the spare tire area looking for the ground for this circuit and puzzling over what it was doing back there ...

Installation pends...looks pretty bright tho...timely in that my pod light recently went out...not so much in that I recently sprang for a jager fascia plate..
