And for a street car, there's really no need for an external engine-oil cooler.

Not only that, on cold days the engine oil will get up to temp quicker with an internal oil cooler which is a plus.

Probably a good time to mention that the two springs which comprise the oil thermostat are something which needs to be changed from time to time. part # 928 107 171 01 and 928 107 173 00 . Over time they tend to be less accurate at directing the oil to start going through the coolerat the correct temperature.

I already replaced mine plus the thermo that was probably fine anyway.....I was getting low oil pressure on hot restarts......all fixed after changing the springs!

My '90 oil cooler took a hit somewhere along the line and has a big divit exactly halfway across the bottom. It's amazing it doesn't leak. When I looked into a replacement, a new one seemed a bit pricey considering the old one works and doesn't leak. I've never seen one come up on eBay. Looking at some aftermarket Porsche suppliers (mostly racing), there are a couple of designs that look really close - the key difference being the manifold arrangement of the oil fittings our car uses. I would think one of those specialty houses could come up with a drop-in replacement, but who know how much it might cost?

And you don't have any more used ones, right? ARGH! Let me know when the next 90+ parts car comes in! I have dibs on the cooler if it doesn't leak!

Having this and the rear fuel loop not available for a 12 year old car presents a real problem. The latter is a serious safety issue. I thought there were US DOT laws requiring vehicle manufactures to provide parts for 15 years. I can't find any documentation, and I would guess it's not so.

my oil temp with the radiator oil cooler is near 270 degrees F on the hottest race days. without it, it is near 280 +
i wonder what the after market oil cooler drops the temp to.

I was given a leaking oil cooler by a 928 buddy. I tried to get it repaired but to no avail. I have been quoted £240 plus tax ~ $600 by an ally rad specialist to fabricate a replacement based on the old one. Any thoughts as to whether I should go ahead?

Jim M just had his repaired locally with a perfect result - looked like new and does not leak anymore.
I have a spare so I will have that fixed and maybe have it for sale on the condition I get the old core for replacement.
I will get with Jim and update.

Anyone have any used leakers out there?

Actually, that's a good idea. These things are not different from many other types used in many other applications. I would think a capable shop could repair a pretty banged up unit.

Wouldn't one of the racing or hot rod supply shops have an in-stock oil cooler that could be adapted?

Does anyone know what the minumum size for an external oil cooler radiator is?

external oil cooler? i dont need no stinking oil cooler. AND, i have one of the most raced, 928 engines on the planet, by far! 6 full racing seasons, over 90 hours of race time. no cooler, just the radiator with the oil cooler ends. it is kind of funny. your 210 degree water gets to cool your 280 degree oil.
