Comparo 07 vette auto vs 88 S4 auto
So I had some time to kill today and drove sharky over to the local Chebby dealer....they had a loaded black on black automatic (not Z06) in stock...with the 6 speed paddle shift auto, nav, XM, heads up display & magnetic shocks....so I take it out for a "drive"
Heres my impressions:
Engine Sound: 928 wins by a mile....the vette sounds mean, but the snarl just sounds funny to me...928 is much more sweet
Ride: Close....but honestly I would say the vette wins...it was surprisingly solid with few squeeks & rattles but it only had 12 miles too...probably squeek like crazy in a few months
Handling: Close....I like the 928's steering better...but the vette sat lower & felt lighter (cause it is)....plus the traction control in competiton mode was sweet...let you hang it out a bit, but not get too stupid
Power: Vette by a mile....damm that thing pulls.....nice mid range that keeps pulling higher up the rpms...but it does drop off a little bit near redline....but by then you are really moving
Brakes: Similar but I didn't push them hard either....
Features: I like the nav system, the heads up display was sweet....showed a tach, speed and cornering G's.....other dash features showed everything you could want...oil-coolant-tranny temp...instant mileage (1mpg when floored), average mileage...but the digital dash 928's do some of this too The paddle shifted automatic shifts surprisingly quick & is easy to use.....but the 6 speed is a myth...more like 4 with two overdrives...80mph= 1600rpms in 6th The vette also has a dual a/c for separate passenger/driver temps which is nice
Mileage: The vette is rated at 17-27mpg...which is quite good for a sportscar...far better (in theory) than the 928, but probably similar in the real world
Price: Of course I OWN the 928 so its cost is ZERO...vs the $58K vette....
Overall: The 928 is still quite competitive against the new vette....it is short on power (easy to fix) but everything else is a close race (other than hi-tech gadgets)....of course the new vette is a transaxle design which was stolen from the 928 (30 years ago)....plus comparing a 96K mile 20 year old car against a brand new vette isn't really fair either...but still the 928 does quite well!
If I was in the market for a sporty daily driver....I'd consider the vette due to its warranty....but I could have one wicked 928 for 1/2 the price!!

I believe the vette is one of the best buys in todays sports car market. Really is a nice car. Great design, great engine, GM really hit the nail this time. Thats really hard for me to say too, because I love german cars!

The base 07 Corvette with no added options is $39,532 (invoice) and most dealers will sell at $500 over invoice.
If GMC blows out the 07's with 0% for 60 months a $15k down payment makes the payment about $470 a month.
Not bad at all.

Ok you guys, turn in your P-cars. I don't find fault with the test drive, I wouldn't mind drivng one for grins. But this talk aboit bang fo the buck has to go. I'll wager that these cars will not stand up over time as a Porsche will. One may argue some of the 996's may have been a little lacking, but the current crop can and should be driven hard, and be none worse for the wear.

Ed, I have driven Porsches that were driven hard like a Chevy, and I don't think they can take it any better, or any longer. When I was a kid I used to say I could make a car last a lifetime, a week or an hour. Go over to the 911 forum and look up Smokey Burnouts. Not a popular subject.

The C6 Vette is sweet. I don't want one but there are some good turbo kits to really wake-up the engine. Here is a good one. http://www.turbochargedpower.com/97-07%20Corvette.htm

I think the C6 and particularly the Z06 are absolute performance bargains. It's bizarre though that 15 (fifteen!) years later, GM still hasn't installed a braking system on the Corvette as good as the one that Porsche put on the 928GTS.

C6 Vette is a nice car for the money and the interior is better then the C5. I looked at the C5 in 04 and wasn't a fan so I bought a GTO which has been a great every day car. It sure is cheaper to mod the goat then it was my 928.
