Rear end gearing change 86, options
Does anyone know or has anyone changed the gearing to provide a lower power band. If so what is involved and any feedback on the subject would be helpfull.

you have to replace the ring and pinion gear, however the pinion gear in these trannies/diffs is a single unit with the main shaft so replacement requires pretty much the whole unit to come apart.

And on a more serious note (for once)... Gary, shot Dr. Rick Carter a PM. He had an 89 4 spd in his 85 for awhile. He could give you an honest assessment.
BTW Sterling, I have 3.09, sport seats and a GTS rear (gears, contact patch and seats) do I win?

Easier to advance your valve timing a bit for more low end. Plus, you'll still have a first gear.

After all the pages of discussion and misunderstandings, it boils down to this. (if you missed that discussion)
Look at the MPH you reach in each gear at max rpms. Knowing that your max acceleration potential at ay speed will be at max power (i.e. acceleration = power/(mass x velocity) , find a gear box that hits the speed ranges you want to run at, and allows for the most amount of power for the longest amount of time possible.

Put a Euro '86 ring and pinion (2.72) in your US box, that will give you gears in 1-4 very close to what Scott has in his 3.09 equiped GTS, but gives you a taller 5th gear which would be the same as a GT (2.73).
PN for Euro 2.72 = 928.302.911.55
This is what the one of the previous owners of my second 5sp did to the car. I'm impressed with the way it runs!!

I did read a lot of posts and it seems that the change would max out first gear and not change much on the other gears. I was looking for a more bang for the buck for off the line with out supercharging. My reading gave me the impression that gear changes are not the way to go.
