Yes use the 3M #80 (BTW they have this packaged about 3 different ways the order code seems to be n08090 for all)

Do not use the even more expensive #90 which is described as heavy duty high temp trim adhesive - but isn't high temp enough.

The lighter weight #88 (n08088) may be sufficient for lightweight pads (<=1/8") the directions on back of the #90 can recommends it for those - but I haven't tried it.

I can confirm that after having to strip the adhesive (#90) from my pad and hood - the #80 does hold in Phoenix summer temps - its the one to get.

Stripping adhesive is one of the most god awfult things to have to do - especially off the pad - nasty chemicals are the only way to go....

However - its possible with a lot of work - just avoid it.

The only good news is I'm now actually getting good at techniques to align the hood more quickly...

Chris,

Noticed that the dipstick off the 82 Euro Motor and my 79 US motor are about the same difference.
They look the same overall but the marks are at a different point. Maybe they very slightly through model years??!!

Yes Chuck you are right they do vary but as the parts do not have a part number on them difficult to tell if this is the issue.

I swapped guide tubes and they are the same, I ordered a new dipstick about 4 years ago and checked the receipt and I ordered the right part but I wonder whether someone pulled it ouf of the wrong bin. My old dipstick was a homemade item but it compares dead nuts on to Dave's.

We just checked three different dipsticks while putting Thurston 85 motor back in the car...Adam's 88 (engine date unknown replacement motor)..John Davis' 87 (1400 vin or so) were both the same as each other and Thurstons out of his 88 was shorter (ie add more oil to fill)..

It's all interesting for sure....

later,
Tom

Wonder if the oil squirter blocks had dipsticks measured for more oil than not.??

ok maybe i am smoking crack. But go with me here. If my dip stick is shorter then say Adam, might it be that my dipstick tube is shorter also? Would have to compare the tubes also to figure this problem out..

By the way we looked kind of strange today waving our dipsticks around yelling mines longer then yours.

maybe it was just me. hahaha..

Stop being confuced and see message #14. There are two different lenght dipsticks, '78-85 short one and '85½-95 long one. There are three different tubes, '78-85, '85½-86 16V and '85½-95 32V. Cut off points are at engine numbers:

Code:
M28/21 82F 00644 -> 00665
M28/22 82F 06403 -> 06404
M28/43 81F 00699 -> 00700
M28/44 81F 06446 -> 06447
