Default Dipstick Tolerance

No not talking about my threshold for dealing with idiots ..... always wondered why I had to add a little more oil than I thought I needed. Well today I compared mine with Dave's as his car was sitting there, as you can see a fair difference.

Is this the difference between S4 and earlier?

As an aside I added a new hood pad with the Porsche shield.

but but but... if you move the bottom one a little to the right, wouldn't it be pretty close to each other?

I'm sure he had the top of the dipstick aligned as that is what determines the depth of the end of the stick...interesting..as Chris has always added more than 8 quarts with each fill..me..usually 8 on the nose...

interesting comparison...

later,
Tom

Looks real good in there. Where did you get the hood liner? I've been wanting to buy one.

what really needs to be done for this compairason is to remove the dipstick tube as well and verify that they are the same length.

Wink

It's always about whose car is faster, or whose dipstick tube is longer...

Quick question- what type of adhesive did you use for the hood liner?

This has been discussed before and it varies by year. I forget exactly how much it varies.

From '86 MY yearly changes document

Oil Dipstick and Guide Tube
(All Engines)
The oil dipstick and corresponding guide tube are changed because of the 8 .5 mm higher toothed belt tensioner. At the same time the oil dipstick and guide tube are approx. 100 mm longer. This makes checking the oil level considerably easier.

Change was done in middle of '85 MY. PET lists engine number cut off points for all four engine types that were in production at the time.
