Default Air Compressor - can it be disabled without creating problems?

The air compressor on my 84 has a very bad whirring sound to it and I believe the bearings or clutch is bad (maybe both). I am considering taking the belt off until I can replace it to prevent it from seizing and damaging something else. I think I should be able to do this and only effect the air conditioning but thought I would see if I am overlooking something.

Thanks in advance for feedback.
