There is a mod to replace the original with a VW unit that is more robust. If $22 is too much to spend to keep your car from catching afire, sell it now. I say this out of love my friend. Nothin' but love.

If you want one I have an ex: GTS one for $15

Reason I have it is I have replaced all mine with the VW versions - I'd recommend this to you too - but if you want to stay stock...?

I'll have to dig it out.

In the the most sincere way, I appreciate guidance in the right direction. So don't stop. It is fused, so I wasn't overly concerned about this.

Well..that's two votes. Good source for a VW version? Besides the VW dealer? And how much for your original with shipping? Thanks.....

PM Heinrich and ask him about his scare with this light fixture. If I remember correctly he was driving with his young child when it shorted out and began to smoke alot. He had to stop the car, jump out and disconnect the battery. Bad ju ju. Mine was broken when I let him drive my car and he told me the story. I fixed it right away after that.

Take care

The VW is not a simple plug & play - you will need a harness connector also and some adaptation to the Porsche connectors -
not hard but a little work to do.

Not sure what new ones go for - you can look on ebay for used for about $15 - $20 but you won't find the harness there.

Shipped $20 should cover the stock one - assume you want the roof one and not for the doors (they are different?)

I think I picked up one maybe two used dome lights before concluding that it's best to buy the very reasonably priced new ones from 928 Intl.

The spring contacts and switch mechanism within the lights seem to fail from getting too hot if left on fot too long (eg door left open). The used ones I've bought have had same faults as ones I was replacing! Putting in new ones in roof and floor meant all was well.

The LED versions fix the overheating problem.

I paid $12.00 for a VW one on E-bay. I think shipping was like $2.00 for a total of $14.00. Made my own harness, looks much better, works better and no fire hazard.

I bought four of these lights on e-bay from a wrecking yard. Got the lights (surround in tan/white), and the four connector plugs with pigtail wires. Painted the plastic surround black, installed them in the '88 and '94 and they look great. NO exposed wires to make contact with anything. I think I paid something like $50-55 for the four of them including the plugs and shipping.

Thanks to Alan and Jim for their suggestion/development of this option.

PS: I have two excellent used ones from the GTS that are available if anyone really wants/needs the OE type.

OK Jim spill the beans - that new central brake light - did you actually replace the hatch glass with old style glass? or etch off the blanking somehow??

I like your thinking - Porsche screwed up the central brake light - darned "B-team" again - way too intrusive to the rear view.

Good job - however you did it!

Alan

(you need to do that rear hatch light too...its funny so do I)

Alan, I replaced the glass, with one from an OB. I tried everything to remove the etching on the original glass, nothing worked! I agree Porsche screwed up the third brake light. The view is now much better, I can finally see the middle of the road behind me. Good eyes, yes I still need to do the rear hatch light too.
