Post starter problems

I have a 84 euro and am gettleing a nasty grinding when starting the car. Got under there and i can move the starter brace over a 1/4 of a inch from side to side. There is only 1 bolt i can see holding this brace to the block. Sould ther be more then that? Looks like i will have to pull the flywheel to even get to this one bolt.Sigh!! Also the sensor that attaches to the flywheel is missing, Whats that little critter do any way?

Thanks for any help.

Thurston, the starter motor is held in place by two long allen-head bolts that should be easily accessible from the starter side.

I believe that flywheel sensor provides timing data for the engine management system. Others here should be able to give you more in-depth info.

I guess the euro '84 must have a different starter configuration than my '79 US.

On mine, the starter is attached with just the two bolts - no 'brace'.

I had that "nasty grinding" sound in the past. It turned out to be a flat spot on the flywheel with replacement as the solution...might as well do a tranny service at the same time if thats the culprit. If you pull the starter and turn the flywheel to inspect it, that should give you your answer. Hopefully the flywheel is OK though. So far as the movement of the starter itself I'd see what some of the more mechanical rennlist participants have to say about that one. With any luck the flywheel is undamaged....good luck!

I think that you are referring to the "securing plate, P/N 928.101.093.01. If so, it is attached using two M8x30 cheese-head bolts and two bushings, P/N 928.101.197.00. And it does look as if you have to pull the flywheel.

I seem to remember that someone managed to pull the flywheel without pulling the motor - perhaps by pulling the transaxle and torque tube back slightly?

Yup, my flywheel was pulled in exactly the fashion you described Wally, and without pulling the motor.

Thanks all. I am pulling the tranny and tourqe tube to get to the flywheel. I am hopeing i am just plane missing oa bolt. But my luck will go something like this. Pull tranny and tourqe tube , Wow thats not to hard, pull flywheel sweet almost there. Pull brace grrr missing bolt broke not totally missing half of it still in block. This is how my luck usually runs. Cross your fingers for me.
