Post Wood dash kits

Hi all;

Just wondering, has anyone placed a wood dash kit in their 928? I found a company that actually sells pre-fab kit for 928s for under $300, but am wondering about the look. I do have wood steering wheel and Jager wood shifter with his silver pod buttons, etc. Concerned about the potential of cheapening the appearance of the interior and the combination with the silver look. Any input appreciated.

Hi REC,

I saw a site with a 928 GT with wood trim in it. It looked pretty nice. I wish I remembered to find where the site was. I'll keep searching and let you know when I find it. Could you tell me what the name of the company is that offers this wood trim? I was actually trying to find a place that would do it in aluminum trim to match the Jager aluminum dials and switches.

FYI..amazing what a few cans of high quality TAMAYIA plastic model paint can do! See your local hobby store. They have aluminum, but after doing some trial parts i found it too loud for the black surroundings in the interior. I went with a gun metal color instead and was more toned down. LOOKS GREAT..with my grey interior and silver car. IMHO of course. I painted the door handle cover (not the handle), the center trim areas around the center vents, radio, digital clock face, side vents in the doors, the mirror switch surroundings, the backing on the round door lock ****, the other various ***** (tool cover, amp cover) and the rear AC assembly. Its actually VERY durable! I wanted to do a more than just a part here and there to avoid that unfinished look to the interior. When i get the car all back together ill post pictures.

Here's the link:

I've seen the 928 with wood trim you're talking about, looks great. My question was, does anyone have wood trim with Jager aluminum pieces? With wood shifter and steering wheel, I see the possibility for a tacky look with additional wood, which would be bad ...

Does anyone have a link to some pictures of such a wood or carbon fiber kit? It states that the kit includes 26 pieces, i wonder where they go?

I remember seeing pics of a 928 cab with custom wood all the way around. It looked very rich. I believe the guy said he may have done it himself. Anyway I will try to search for the website. Also if anybody knows of a company that manufactures quality wood steering wheels your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

One thing to consider is that wood kits can look nice in pictures but not so nice in person. Most of these kits are stick-ons, with a 3M adhesive and peel-off backing. When the wood is applied it is physically "on top of" the existing dash, not embedded in it like many factory wood dashes. You can easily feel the edges, and unfortunately you can also usually see them.

I had a kit on a vehicle a few years ago that made me very mad because it looked like it had been stuck-on. The kit was high quality, the installation was perfect, and it looked just like every other car with a wood kit. I just wasn't happy with what was, in my opinion, a very tacky and cheap looking interior.

Just some food for thought.

I contacted the Sportwing company today, and got the following schematic of the pieces. It seems the kit was initially designed for the early cars up to '84 (note the seat switch covers, and the missing covers for the seat memory). I'm not sure about the panel around the AC controls - The hole looks out of place for my '91 model.

Anyway, you should be able to use most of the kit for all years. Nobody says you have to use all the parts...

It is available in two wood types (real wood, or plastic wood???), and a variety of carbon colors.

Here is the schematic:

And here are some pics of cars with factory wood option (parts no longer available). Note that this one uses the round clock from the 924 S:

Enjoy!

I put some carbon around the shifter, clock, stereo and H piece. I think it goes well with the carbon on my shifter and the Aluminum look from Jager. Just took some patience to get it right.

Below is a link to the picture

Looks nice Jerry,
where did you get this stuff? I assume it's some sort of carbon sheet you formed with a heat gun?
regards,
Sab.

Jerry

That was kinda what I was thinking about too. Yours looks good. I've got a Jager shifter with the carbon tip. My interior is black, so I figured a few bits of cabon might pick it up a bit...
