I was able to get to the car this weekend and the end play travel is .020". I measured it about for times. I read in a post the the max travel is .016". I haven't had time to get the the manual to double check the specifications, but this is what I got. Are the specifications the same for a 90 S4 as the older cars?

So, how much life do I have left? Should I part it out? Should I drive it until it breaks? Chevy motor may be an option?

I have been very depressed after making the measurement, and to top it off, I had to travel to Norman OK for work.

I going to the Hotel bar and get a drink.

Hey bro if you have a bit of time dont run the engine but pull it out remove the oil pan and the girdle and check the crank and see if the bearing had enough left to keep the crank from hitting the journal, also see if the bearing spun and if thewre are grooves on the thrust face of the crank, have someone that knows what to look for check this you may get away with a crank regrind/polish and a new set of rod and main bearigs. At any rate dont run the engine anymore till the motor is pulled once it starts to make metal the other oil passages will fill with metal and the engine will really be toast IE the lifters, cams, tensioners, oil pump, plus the oil cooler, Goodluck on your journey, Stan

That is barely out of spec. But barely means you need to pull the motor and have and have it rebuilt.
