It's not always easy to purge all the air from the system. I'd check that first.

I'd be careful about driving it! I had that exact problem, and it turned out the water pump had seized, though the timing belt went right along turning (luckily it didn't burn through!)

Adam-
I had a similar noise when my water pump was going out. Still pumped, but started leaking very slowly. Might shine a light up towards the pump and watch for small leaks. I never saw any coolant running out, but could smell hot antifreeze after the engine was off. I think it was evaporating as fast as it came out.

I bet the car has just now burped itself after coolant loss from service. Like Harvey aka H57 says.

Ah ....."But I did just pull the front cooling flap control module from under the passenger sill cover to make room for my new car alarm. Could this be affecting my fans somehow?" ........... Bingo we have a winner! note that even the later cars sans flaps still have the control unit because IT controls the fans !

Uh yeah - that'd be it... "Coolant Fan Control Unit"

Adam - what were you thinking?

Hmmm. How important could such a shiny silver box be? It's too light to be of any real importance. No matter, I'll put it back in and just remove those other two shiny boxes in the kick panel, that'll give me even more room.

Just when I thought I could actually fake my way through the wiring diagrams. I swear I thought it said "flap" control module, not "fan" control module.

I thought for sure one fan was turning when it first happened, even when I checked it again night. Yes it was dark, but I thought I could hear the one fan turning and when I put my hand in the vicinity, I thought I was feeling air being pulled through. Pulled out the flash light and indeed, neither fan was spinning. Hit the A/C, same thing. At that point, I knew I had been mistaken when I thought they were going earlier, and wrote a note to go get the box and reinstall.

I guess it beats a WP replacement. We've got the Heckowee Tour coming up in about 62 hours, and I've got a LOT of work to do.

Yes - think positive - the good news - you know how to fix it and already have the parts !

How many of us haven't done something similar.

And yes thats a definite alternate option remove all the modules you can find and send them to me - that will solve your noises and overheating problems for sure

Adam's thought to self after removing all modules from the car and turning the key:
"Wow, the car is running suprisingly quiet, can't imagine why Alan would want MORE of those things".

Does this mean you're cancelling the eBay auction I just won?? I'll sell you your shiny boxes back Adam, provided you throw in that noisy, greasy thing under the hood. You won't need that anyway.
