You guys are talking about what I have been struggling with: how many miles should I tolerate on a car? My parents have always frowned on cars with >60K miles, so I previously maintained that mindset. Now, I find myself looking at cars with 100K and thinking they might be a good deal. The examples I have driven probably fell into the category of what Brendan said: "impaired" because so much needed replacement on them. Conversely, there is the thinking around here that "too few miles over too many years" is a problem as well. I don't know. I think at this point, I'm just going to find the car with the right color and tranny combo I want, and expect to put money into it replacing things. I just know that I don't have $50K to start with!

I dunno, It is a hard one to swallow. I just don't look at the odometer anymore. I think if i was buying, this would be a factor (thus I paid under 5K for the 85 I have) But now that I have it and that it is a 22 year old car, at some point I have to leave go of the mileage factor and just fix the car correctly as it needs it. I can't have my cake and eat it too. But the bottom line is high miles IS going to hurt resale value.

My biggest problem is I can't sell my cars after I get them. I want to hang onto them forever. So, resale value isn't really an issue for me. At this point I have decided that if I find the right color in a 5 speed, I will be more apt to stay enamored with it and I will have more tolerance for issues that arise. At least that is what I keep telling myself. I have become a bit obscessed with finding the "right" 928; I am actually having alot of fun searching for and researching 928's.

Kinda where I am at. I have this 85 and its a very nice car. I have committed to it mentally. the car is nice, Im just going to keep putting it back together when it breaks... the only thing that would tare me away from it now would be a give-away gt. or if some one offered me REALLY stupid money for it, and I mean REALLY stupid. But again the point was, high miles hurts resale value

I agree, and my point is that you will want/need to do that with a 100k mile 928 too.

No Doubt. Some of the wear I found on my 89 which only had 75k was astonishing.

Brendan, it seems to me the discussion should be "What is his reserve?" I agree w/Stan. Doesn't matter whether S4, GT or GTS, age/mileage is the issue. And price. The BIN is $14K. And then there is the possibility that he might take less a week after the auction ends, you never know, or it might go in the next hour. I was just alerting people that there might be a $12K GT. I don't know if I would like her at 168K, but might be worth a look.
