Some people just do not get entertainment out of their cars. I derive immense pleasure from driving my 928, and my speedy Saabs. My wife... she just cruises. Her whole family is the same way; my father in law drives an SLK320. Why, I'll never know; he never pushes it at all; drives it like a fogey (no offense, fogey). He just turned 50!

That is a great point, though... some people are afraid of what they don't understand. My wife doesn't understand that while I might be going very fast, I'm never travelling at an unsafe speed for the conditions. There's no chance on earth I could convince my wife to take a performance driving course. But it can't hurt to ask, right?! lol

I was driving about 60MPH yesterday night coming home from work and was coming up on an intersection; there are 2 left turn lanes at this intersection and all the cars about to turn were in the leftmost lane. At the end of the turn there is a 2-1 merge.

The arrow was about to go green and I was in the rightmost left-turn lane. I pulled it out of 4th gear, tapped the brake just a touch and dropped it to 2nd (still doing probably 45), ripped the wheel left, blipped it and completed the turn before anyone else got past the crosswalk.

My wife flips out and starts punching and hitting me.. ya know, the logical to do when im sliding into a corner,... I only did this once with her in the car... holy crap she was in tears.

the thing is it was in a parking lot with about 1/2" of snow on the ground. we were going MAYBE 20 MPH...

anyway back to the post. She is not scared of the s4, she is scared of the driver

My ex-girlfriend hated my shark too. Took her for a short spin around the block the first week I had it and he got seriously mad at me for punching it (actually maybe 60-70% throttle) from a stand still at a light to make a left hand turn. Never really exceeded the speed limit – but I will admit she was thrown back in her seat ever so slightly . That & the slight G’s of the left turn set her off and that’s when she started yelling at me. She never got in the shark again after that.

But truthfully I don’t think she never liked the car from the moment I got it – so I guess it’s kind of a good thing she’s my ex now.

My wife loves going for drives with me in our shark. 'It's such a comfy car' she says, 'every time i get in it, it makes me want to go to sleep'.
Then I'll ask her 'how fast do you think we are going?'
She says 'I dunno'
I say ' have a look'
She says 'holy F*&$%@ S&*%, are you serious, that cant be right!'

That usually wakes her up. haha

I feel sorry for you guys whose wives give you a hard time. I'm always egging Kevin on to go faster faster faster. In fact, I get annoyed that I can't do the same things in mine that he does in his, but I've got some learnin' to do.

Still, I LOVE getting my car sideways...every chance I get. I LOVE chirping the tires. And I LOVE going fast!! Wheeeeee!!



Courtshark, has your wife ever gotten a chance to drive your car? Maybe that's the problem. If she knew how easy the car is to handle and control, maybe she wouldn't get so nervous.

And Fraggle, no offense to your wife but...how the heck do you get the car to spin out of control at only 35 mph and wreck it???? How can 35 mph ever be outside the abilities of the average driver, even female? That's just a shame. I'm so sorry for your pain.

She wouldn't drive it even if I asked her to. Like I said, she is scared of it. I'd gladly let her; she's not a bad driver. Very careful. But she'd get no joy out of it other than to say she's driven a Porsche. She drives the 9000 Aero listed below; that car is a screamer in its own right. Might as well be a '75 Caddy the way she drives it...

She'd go ape**** if she really knew the 85-90% limit driving my buddy Chris ( He has a 911) & I do on our local backroads. A, couple of weeks ago we got pretty radical- It was a weekday, clear ,sunny ,dry conditions, very isolated road & about 11am- maybe saw 2-3 other cars the whole 20 miles. Short of my track experience, it was the funnest drive I can remember!

Full story is this:

Up steep grade into a 3 way intersection, early April. She downshifts to first (!) gets a little wide and catches what's left of winter's traction sand at just the wrong time. Overcorrects twice - all the while catching more sand because she's off line. Didn't take much more time to finish - she did keep it out of the guard rails, which I thanked her for... later.

My wife drives her Volvo S70 T5 very well - but it is FWD and a turbo car, it doesn't have the grunt the 928 has. Overall it was really a cheap lesson, two wheels and some tires. I do want to get her to some auto-X's to gain some more skills this year to help increase her margins. We'll see. She's notoriously stubborn about getting advice from me for some reason.

She knows that the 'pace' of our drives can be rather high - and is OK with it, especially now that I'm out of the superbike game, where the pace was getting VERY high and the risk is a lot worse. She's been with me in my 914 and nearly gotten sick on moutain roads, so other's experience there isn't isolated. It is all in fun for all, though.

I once dated a girl who never drove a car in her life. No license. No desire to drive. She took the bus to work. She just sat there calmly and quietly in my 911 and I reasoned that she simply didn't realize what was happening. I doubt she cared what was happening. Just transportation. But she knew how to get my motor running: let me drive my 911. Foreplay for sure. Then I was all right and good to go. Don't ask where!!

Before the 911, I had a Speedster. When it rained, I simply handed her a towel and said to use it to keep dried off. No roll up windows in a Speedster and the water just poured in. She never said a thing. Rare bird if there ever was one. Hey, maybe I should go look for her....... 'cause the one thing that will **** me off big time is for my girl to tell me to "slow down". It is time for taxi for her at that remark. I want to tell her to STFU. Who needs that?? The ones that say that only say it once, ususally, unless they're wealthy and stealthy. Then they can get away with it a second time.

Fun thread! In my family, I'm the one who drives my passengers to vomit.

I don't have any cool stories to share, though. But I did get pulled over once when I was seven months pregnant because some old fart called me in for reckless driving (HIS opinion). The officer just rolled his eyes and told me to have a nice evening......and, well, I guess I did roll my Toyota into a cow pasture once..... BUT I've never had a moving violation in the twenty-five years I've been driving so I must be doing something right.... or too slow!

In the end-
I would be interested in a good driving class (and a radar detector). It would be mucho fun to have a PacNW928 women's class. Doesn't PCA sponsor classes?
