Euro Rear Fog Light
#2
Do all 928's have a rear fog light? I am not familiar with that component. If so where would I find it on my 81'? By the way, how is the house selling going. What are your plans for employment when you get back out this way? Just curious.

Rear fog lamps are not incorporated into US models.
IMHO, most of our US regulatory decisions are based upon targeting the "lowest common denominator" vs. expecting and obtaining excellence from drivers.
- lousy DOT headlamp patters that are insensitive to rear loads vs. great ROW headlamps and manual level adjustment.
- no rear fog lamps because people don't understand how to use them vs. greater safety.
- an insane compulsion for low speed limits vs. requiring and testing for better drivers and requiring safety inspections to ensure cars are safe to drive.

In my fantasy land, it would be cool if there was such a thing as a "high-performance" driver's license. And a ratings system for which cars are allowed to go over certain speeds.
Then if you have the license, and the proper car, you would be allowed to go faster on certain parts of the road where it is just straight and flat.
This special license would also allow you to get out of tickets, if you happend to get pulled over for speeding. If you are a good driver, in a car with awesome brakes, etc, it would be legal to go a bit faster than the normal cars in certain speed zones.
But this will never happen, as long as tickets are a prime source of revenue...

Well put, bcd-
I mean, think about it. If you want to take a few friends for that infamous $100 breakfast a state or two away, then you go out and invest $3000 for a private pilot's license. If you want to fly them through a cloud while doing it, then you invest a little more and get an instrument rating. If you want to take them in a 747, then you get a 747 type rating and hire a crew. In aviation, more privileges = more training/licensing. Sad that it cannot be this way for driving.
Unfortunately, it is just the other way around with cars. To fly a jet you need all the above. To own a gun, you have to go through background checks. But to operate another potentially lethal device, in this case, the common automobile, you need only pass the most basic tests. I think the average Florida driver has more dexterity extending their middle finger than they have dexterity for keeping their 10-mph-below-the-speedlimit SUV in the correct lane!

And oh yeah... The rear fog lights are only on the euro 928. The idea is that when you turn on the fog lights, they assume it is actually foggy, and so a red rear light comes on, to alert cars coming up behind you of your presence. Even when you are not hitting the brake lights.

What about this one.. why do the parking lights come on when you leave your turn signal engaged and shut the car off? BTW I used to think that the rear fog light was some kind of parking light. As a kid, I always pictured a german street filled with twinkling parked 928's.

Brad, in Europe, where many of the streets date from the middle ages [and are as such very narrow], people leave those lights on so that passing traffic can see their car better and collisions can be avoided. To properly use this, you should turn on the lights on the side that sees passing cars, generally the left.

Hey hey hey! My seal guys, remember?! - just kidding- but really doesn't anybody know where to find this seal?
Jim- We had a showing of our house last weekend but nothing came out of it. I'll just have to wait it out. As far as employment my family boards their horses with a gentleman who owns a flight operation that hauls mail. They start in Reno, make a stop in Carson, then a stop in Sac., then on to Oakland and back. He said when I get out there to get in touch with him so I'm hoping to land a spot in the right seat. Otherwise I'll probably look into instructing. I'll be sure to get in touch when I get out there.

Hi Flormat
I expect I could get a seal here for you, but you might have to pay import duty. I assume you mean the gasket between the rear PU cutout and the outer rim of the fog light ?

Flormat,
If you do find a place please post it, I have an 84' 928S Euro and the plastic cover is broken on the rear fog light, and I cannot locate a cover anywhere. The only option offered to me was to purchase the whole light assembly, for about 150 bucks.

American cars have never had the rear fog lights and nobody here really knows what they are. I put them in my 944 (stock sockets are there for them)
I totally agree with the speed limit statements, especially on the highway. I mean we do use a LCD method, meaning worst case driver, worst case condition and worst case traffic.
A high performance car on a sunny day on an open stretch of highway at 100 MPH is just as safe as a Yugo on a crowded, wet road at 40 MPH.
I always thought it would be cool to have speed limit signs that change with the weather and traffic conditions. Think of it, solar powered signs with sattellite links for updating of speeds. So it could read 55 MPH in high traffic times and open up to 85 MPH when the traffic is light.
Don't hold your breath it will never happen. Too much revenue is made off of speeders.
Excuse me, but I have to call about paying my speeding ticket (51 in a 35)

You might be able to find the rear fog light parts here:
http://www.eurocarparts.com
I order from them frequently and there's no problem with shipping or payment (VISA/MC) or anything. Shipping costs more, but for Euro spec parts, what are you gonna do?
If they don't have what you need listed, ask them via email. They'll get back to you and will probably have whatever you need.

Thanks, I went to eurocarparts.com just now but they did not have the seal. I'll have to email them.
Jon,they did not have just the lense either- just the whole rear fog assembly. Maybe do a search for a salvage yard in the UK. They may even ship internationally.
