Talking Bragging Time - walked a Vette

Okay - Even thought my Shark isn't Beautiful (at least not yet) I had to share my checkered flag victory over a cocky vette owner.

Mind you this was just a C5 vette - I'm still waiting for a chance to run against a Z06 (I know I'll loose but by how much is the question?)

Traveling eastbound on US 60 - I approach a C5 vette in the middle lane with Aftermarket wheels and Exhaust.

I pass him in the far left lane and I thought to myself, why not, open lanes, no traffic and clear visibilty. So I back down to his speed. We're traveling side by side at 70 mph - I look at him he looks at me and the race was on.

He kicked down first and got the 1/2 second jump. I threw her down to third and immediatley caught him. I left her in third and started playing with him like a predator does to his meal. At this time, we are approaching 120 mph so, time to put him in his place. I stand on it and hit redline in third, shift to fourth and I started to walk away. Literally. By this time, I'm in excess of 140 mph and decide it's time to slow down. He caught up and gave me this BLANK STARE but with a Thumbs UP. At this time my exit was approaching and I got off the freeway and he followed. At the light, he pulled along side of me and Said - What do you have in that thing - I was standing on it and couldn't even catch you. MUSIC TO MY EARS - I felt so giddy like the first time I kissed a girl - Man, that's a great feeling.

I also would like to say, I don't make it a habit of street racing so please don't do anything stupid like I just did. The only reason why I did is because it was clear of all traffic. Street Racing is a stupid thing to do and people can get hurt or killed. Sometimes when opportunity knocks you have to take it, so please know your vehicle, the road and your limitations and remember, it gets real ugly if your caught. One thing I have going for me in my corner is that my BRother is a Deputy Sherrif but it still doens't make it right - But....... it was sooooo sweet to walk the C5 Vette.

Man, that PC caveat was almost as long as the story <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" /> .

Have fun, be safe - often times these are mutually exclusive events.

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah I know when I'm the underdog but it would be still fun to try. Also, with a little engine work, my 310 could easily be bumped up to 400 - Then it would be a good race. I still would probably loose but what the Hell .......you can't always be on top.

Drewster, I also had a race with my cousin's 93 RX-7 TT. On clear lanes of course. I have an 84 with the 310 Hp motor. From a stand still I get the earlier jump, because of his lag. But his third and fourth gears are very powerful. After 120 mph it seems that he has the edge but I have the guts and end up in front. Also, handling, I feel way more secure in the 928 around a high speed turn than in the RX. I need about another 30 to 40 rear wheel HP, any cheap suggestions? Sal

Exhaust - Headers and pipes.

(I have MSDS headers) Upgrade your pipes to 3", omit the cats (if u can) and put a good RMB on it. That'll wake her up a little bit.

Run 98 octane (91 pump and a fuel additive) 98 Octane is required for all M28/21 and M28/22 engine tranny combo. No more because it's not going to help.

K&N Filter will let her breath a little easier as well.

Anything else, you'll have to throw some real bucks into her (Worth it I may ad).

Don't you just love it?.

Cool

I had the same results with a C5 one afternoon Drewster...I only took it to about 100, but the question asked at the next stoplight was the same-

Really? I have not seen a EuroS put out 400hp unless it was supercharged or NOS.
Maybe "easily" is subjective.
Have fun, drive safe!

Never had the chance to run a C5, but once I ran clear away from a C4 with the Twin Turbo. That guy looked at me with a blank stare too! It would be close, but in a straight line, mid range I think my 81 would take a stock C5.

Doubt you could get a Euro S to 400 HP, without stroking and bumping compression way up. I am somewhere between 375-415 HP on 8.5 psig of boost with 8.5:1 pistons.

Now, does anybody want to sell me their Euro heads complete with cams?

Easily = A lot of money
400hp = Supercharged

I hate to tease, but I have in my possession a 84S2 spare motor - M28/21. Everything minus the FI harness.

It came from my parts car. I haven't decided what to do with it yet. If I decide to sell the top end. I'll post it on Rennlist First.

John V,

Hopefully I'll be able to show you a Euro 928 that has over 400 hp soon. My car has been with Lucky Ekman of Devek for over two years getting rodded. Here is the list:

88 S4 block bored to 104 mm (5.4L) 10.5:1 comp
J&E forged pistons
Devek drilled crank
944 2-valve heads
Devek high lift racing cams
Extrued Honed Euro S intake
Electromotive engine management
Devek Jet Hot coated headers & custom exhaust
Devek radiator
S4 cooling fans
S4 brakes
ETC., ETC......

Thumbs down

Drewster...

I find your story interesting as there's absolutely no comparison performance-wise between a C5 Corvette and any model year 928 let alone an older one as yours.

For starters, our 928 weighs nearly 500 pounds more.

Since you're wondering how badly you'll lose to a Z06, consider the numbers:

928S 310hp:
0-30 2.7s
0-60 6.6s
0-100 17.0s
1/4 mi 15.0s @94mph

Z06 405hp:
0-30 2.05s
0-60 3.9s
0-100 10.27s
1/4 mi 11.9s @123mph

And the synopsis is....

The Z06 is already out of the country before you're out of first gear.

If you figure that each tenth of a second represents a car-length, then after the 0-100 sprint, you'd be nearly 70 car lenghts behind which comes out to be approx 1,038 feet. In the quarter mile you lose by over 30 car lengths.

That is not even funny, and borders on being down right ugly.

However, the GTS does makes it a little more interesting, and we'll pit it against a convertible C5:

928 GTS 350hp:
0-30 2.2s
0-60 5.4s
0-100 14.3s
1/4 mi 14.1s @94mph

C5 350hp:
0-30 ?
0-60 4.5s
0-100 10.6s
1/4 mi 13.1s @111mph

As you can see, even though it's 'just a C5 vette', it easily spanks the king of the hill 928 GTS by nearly 40 car lengths in the 0-100 sprint. And in the quarter mile it's by 10 car lengths.

Big-time butt-kicking no matter how you look at it.

Unless one has major motor mods, a 928 will not beat a C5 in a heads-up race, both drivers being equal.

Are you running nitrous?

By the way, how could you tell he was running an aftermarket exhaust?

Ive been around enough to know stock exhaust versus aftermarket exhaust. I belong to Pro Auto Sprts Racing Club and there are alot of C5/Z06 vettes within the club. So I know ......

As far as the race is concerned, my shark isn't stock for one thing my friend. I have MSDS Headers, K&N filter,Devek Racing Radiator and the PO did a little tranny work in order to shift at Redline rather than 4 in second gear.

You can take stock numbers, as you provided, and discard them. They are for relative purposes only and will never be "dead on" - I.E. Altitude, Temperature, Track Surface and reaction time all play a part in "production time" estimates. Yes I know the Z06 will walk from my S2 - Ive rode in a 2002 that was track modified with front/rear spoiler, exhaust and slicks. Pretty nice I may add but I still say it didn't feel that much faster, but it was faster.

Also, the numbers you provided are from a DEAD STOP - 1/4 mile times and they mean diddley in a roll on race such as the one I experienced. From a standstill, The C5 may take my automatic, but from a roll on race - I say my shark runs exceptionally well. More so than many US contenders. I.E. Cobra Mustang, or a C5 Vette.(Had to throw that in there :-) )(I raced a Cobra with my Modified GT Stang)

I'm not the only one who has battled a C5 and won. Maybe it was driver error, maybe his C5 wasn't tuned properly. Who knows, but what I can tell you, I WAS STANDING ON IT AND COULDN'T CATCH YOU, is what he said. That tells me he was at least trying. I understand your a proud Z06 owner and you probably favor the 6 over the 928, but please be optomistic - it may and did happen.

Thanks for your feedback and BTW, I love a Good Argument!
