Post Somebody do me a favor - spank an M5

Some clown was toying around with me on the freeway. My 1980 with 240HP doesn't stand a chance against a 2002 M5 5speed (or 6speed?) Anyway, I just pretended I wasn't interested. Those things absolutely launch even from 70mph. He wanted me to, but I never bit. My car still looks cooler though although they're just about as rare...

A buddy of mine has an '01 M5 and an '02 Carerra. I'd take the Carerra any day. Didn't ride in the "family" car so my face is AOK. Another friend has a '97 M3 with tons of Dinan goodies and at about 305 HP that gives me a pretty good taste of what the M5 can probably do. I just hope one of the guys out there has a 400+ HP two-8 that can hand some of those M-flyers their asses...

My supercharged SEC will do a quick number on an M5 on the highway. 10 PSI of boost in a Mercedes 5.6L V8 makes for one fast ride.

Yeah baby!

You must take into consideration the fact that the M5 is a NATURALLY aspirated 11:1 comp. small block, V-8 and gets 400 ponies. I'd sure as hell take one for my everyday driver!

That is until Porsche builds that 4-door 928!

The Bastard will rip up on the M5 and the other yuppies in the M3s too. I had one (M5) try to play me while driving a 2.8 Audi A6, I mean get real. Give me my V8 back and it would have been a different story. I'll take it in the wet with my 320 HP Audi S4.

It's always the same, some young 30 something guy in the M3, top down, wire rim sunglasses, microwaved and bleached hair, and too much bronze tinting to make him look tan.

Best part is both, make that all three of my cars have less money in them than one M5. Remember, he is probably making HUGE lease payments on it. Hope that makes you feel better.

According to Fred Schwab, PCNA Chairman, so are 40+% of new Porsche owners. I wonder what the purchase to lease ratio is for BMW and Mercedes?

Lease=Can't afford to buy it, pure and simple. You never come out ahead on a leased personal vehicle.

About three months ago I owned a 944 Turbo with the K-27 Turbo, lightned flywheel, exhaust and so on. I was driving on route 3 on my way home when an M-5 came behind me and flashed me with his high beams so I dropped it to fourth, redlined it threw it into fifth and was doing 140 mph when he casually came on my right side and took off as if I threw it in reverse, then he slowed down gave me a thumbs up and took off again. looked in the mirror and wondered where I put the blueprints and like a dog that was hurt just limped my way back home. Sincerely blown away Sal

OH MY GOD,
Does this mean 928 owners are now to be branded as realists?
A healthy sign I think...
The '5' is truly an awsome piece of machinery, just no getting around it!
I want one!
Plain and simple fact we have to pick our battles.
I tangle with Camaro's, Stang's, blah, blah, blah all the time. No drag racing, limited distance, 2nd gear - high rpm kick downs, with my geezer face on -just shy of drooling-.
Works well.
Still...victory is never assured. Hell, I got abused by what looked like a WRX wagon one Sunday morning while on a doughnut run. Young ladies clad in CLK's and even the occasional Lexus.
Forgive the confession... but Pattycakes is a 82', 4.5L, 3 spd Auto. What's a guy to do?
Save for an S-4, of course!
There are few - 1 or 2 - vario cammed' 928's, a dozen or so of Turboed/SC'd iterations and still we hold our own. The newest 928 out there is what near 8 years old? The M-5's V-8 is only 3 or 4 years old, then Dinan spends the better part of 2 years finding 70 more HP in there and maps the hell out of what has to be a factory rocket to begin with. Hope they are all painted red
.
I have to agree with what Nicole has said in the past on concerning modifications.
Why butcher a Weissach or any 928 to go faster in the occasional street race? Yeah, it can be done ...
SC or Turbo, cams, oversized pistons, head work, stand alone engine management systems ...
Awsome indeed, when its done right and probably cheaper than a $80K plus. Unfortunately, no one is giving SC'd Strokers away for X'mas, and while most of us are keeping above the poverty level, in my case, and I suspect a lot of others, there is little chance of building that special 928.
Hope springs eternal for a future shot at an S4, though.
Assuming I educate the kids thru a R.O.T.C. College Program, and my wife (or the neighbor's dog)doesn't find where I have buried the loot.
Still... for a variety of reasons the 928 was and still is the car of my dreams.
Then again...I'm still a Pittsburgh Pirate fan

Ok...

I saw this guy at Ralphs, in line behind me. He was about my age, maybe a bit older. He gave me a dirty look, probably because I look like a freak at times. When I was loading up my car with groceries, he was definitely surprised to see me in a Porsche. I see him walk a few cars down, and get into a M5. Not a brand new one. Probably a couple of years old. It had the new style headlights though. It was silver, with the M5 badge, the spoilers, low profile tires, big wheels, etc... So when we both headed down the same empty stretch of road at 1:30AM, I figured that he may try to race me. But for a while he just stayed behind. But I was watching carefully, waiting for him to do something. I figured it would be unfair if I took off first, since I was already in front of him. But I saw him take off, and I punched it. We were already doing 80, so that is the perfect powerband and speed for the 928. It downshifted and took off. He stuck with me for a bit, just half a carlength behind, and keeping pace. Then I started to slowly pull away, as we hit about 130-140. By the time we hit the end of the straightaway, he was 3-4 carlengths back.

Fun!

Just a typical trip to the grocery store...

I'm not saying the M5 isn't a faster car, and has more horsepower. But in the right circumstances, you can win.

Heading in to town (Oslo) a couple of months ago.
This Audi S4 got on my tail and started to push me before getting onto the highway.
My 79 928 Auto (3 speed) with a 82 928S engine was getting ready for the pull away.

What I should have done was to manually select 2'nd, wich I didnt.

The 3 bastard kids in the s4 was laughing their asses of as they passed me doing 80.
After getting myself together and got the revs up I caught up with at 110+.

I know I could have taken them if I just got it down earlier, I know it damn it.
At least I like to think so.

I still have nightmares about that day.
I know I could have taken them.
M5.....would not dream of getting on with that any day.
Geir......

Angry

Wishfull thinking and internet babble will not make a stock 928 beat the M5. Get real.

I own a new shape 540i and it'll smoke any stock 928. M5 will murder a 928. Period.
