I've got the HTR-Z's and I am happy with them. You just can't beat the price. They are fairly soft however...

Sumitomo HTRZ II's are garbage. My dad's new 993 had these tires (bought the car about a month ago). Last Sunday we took his car for a little jaunt on the PCH and the rear right tire blew out. The tread part had separated from the sidewall, and became deformed. We couldn't even roll slowly to a turn-out, we had to just shove the car into a narrow shoulder and put on the spare.

And if you're thinking this may be a fluke, you may be right. However, while we were flying through the twisties and backroads, I noticed the tires would always start squealing too early, and they're break traction a little sooner than I'd expect from a performance tire. I can't say anthing about their lifespan or wet performance, since we only used them for the month of May, but as a backroad tire, I wouldn't recommend them. They did only OK.

I'll go take a pic and post it later. I've never seen a blow-out as bad as this, and it is clear it's due to a factory defect. They were practically new 255/40/zr17 on the rear and 205/50/zr17 on the front. We just got some Fuzion ZRi tires for daily use, which have gotten nothing but praise on this site. They are crazy-inexpensive and perform well in every regard. With the way we use the car, I think S-02s or something would be overkill, and these Fuzions are just right.

i bought a set of HTRZ's (NOT HTRZ II's) awhile back to try them. they were horrible. i removed them after three days and threw them away. they literally scared me. when i'd turn in, the tire would lean on its sidewall and then oscillate the rear end back and forth. turned my porsche into a POS.

I have experience with a few sets of HTRZ-IIs. Set one is 255/40-17 on an Audi S4 quattro at all four corners. The other set on a '91 Carrera 2.

They are comfortable cruising tires or daily driver tires. Sidewalls are not terribly stiff though so don't expect a real crisp turn-in. They do a nice job in the rain although don't push them too hard in the twisties. Great for what I'd call moderate use but if you're a 9/10ths kind of driver don't go for the budget tires.

I ran a set of these on my Audi V8q and my A6 4.2. They were a good tire for the money. For open track use, they aren't the best as they would over heat. Other than that, I was pretty happy with them. Sets would last me 15k miles tops.

As for the one blowing out, I'd venture to say it was low tire pressure that caused overheating and subsequent failure. I work in the automotive field and drive a lot of different tires. New tires hardly ever fail.

I replaced my Sumi's (which were on the car when I bought it) with a set of Nexen 3000's - 225 40 18, & 265 35 18. They have a very cool, and aggressive tread pattern- they are "Y" speed rated (186 mph/ 300 kph), have a 340 tread wear rating, AA traction rating, and an A- temp. rating- all very impressive specs. They are very quiet, show very little wear even after some tough road & track abuse, and are very respectable in the rain. The price was quite reasonable too. I highly recommend them.

On a side note, I even went to the shop yesterday.
I tought my car was defective or something...thats how bad it is.

Yeah sure they are cheap and they look cool to...I got succered in.

Looks like I'll have to change them and try to sell them (1/2 or less) to some Ricer or something.

without starting a new tire thread, does anyone here have experience with the Continental ContiExtremeContact? Price is similar to Fuzion's, Yoko ES100's etc. I'm looking for a little better treadwear.

Did not like the one set of g-force tires on my son's Roush, would not get them again. Have had very good success with four sets of Kuhmos on three different cars, including my 928. Have also had good success with a couple different sets of Conti tires, including the Extreme Contacts. Both sharks currently have Bridgestone Potenzas on them due to thats what came on the car or the wheels when I got them. I'd own the Continentals & Bridgestones again for the results, but have been happy enough with the Kuhmos to see no reason to pay the difference in the price. Especially when the Roush & my shark are sportin 295s on the rears.

I have 18" HTRZ II's, 265's and 285's, and have been very happy with them.

Looks like quite a few other people are happy with them too:

I am going to try the General Exclaim UHP (made by Continental) next week.

They have great reviews and are just a little bit more $$$$ but the only have 245 or 275 sizes.

I suspect that the 18's makes a difference...Shorter sidewals.
It is because of a similar review that I got the SUMIs.
In 17's formfactor it is just to "WIGLY" to be driven properly.
