Default Non-power seats and power mirrors - New problem

NEW Problem - see bottom of thread.

I replaced my stock 8-way heated seats with Recaro SRDs for open road racing. Nice seats, but they are non-power, of course. My car also has seat and mirror memory on the driver side. Since the SRDs were installed my mirror adjuster switch no longer works for either side. Fuse 12 is OK. The switch harness has power on the red wire and ground on the brown. I puzzled over the wire diagrams for a while but, as usual can't make heads or tails out of them. It appears the mirrors should work, although the memory function wiring diagram leaves me even more puzzled about how to test this. Both sides are not working, so I'm not suspecting the motors, but I'd like to be able to rule out the switch or if the loss of power seats is at fault, is there a way to jumper the harness to get the mirrors working again? Alan? Dave? Anybody?

Oh, search is good...
https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...t=power+mirror
I need to check fuse 20 and 24.

...well, those are OK. Off to check the mirror memory module conenctions.

the problem is the mirror functions go thru the seat's control box. same thing happens when installing sport seats.

(digging thru old emails...)

try this:

> assuming two connectors ( small with 5 wires and
> large with 14 wires ) came
> off the memory module:
>
> jumper pin 2 on the small connector to pins 8 *and*
> 13 on the large connector.

Thanks, Dave. That looks like the problem. I noticed I have no memory function at all anymore either. I'll stop testing and start jumpering.

Bill,

I had exactly the same situation on my '88 S4's, and of course on the current '89 S4 5 spd when I put the Recaro SRD's in. There is only one or at most tow connections that need to be jumped. I don't recall what they are, and my circuit diagrams are not accessible right now.
Just go to the workshop manual and check out the wiring diagrams on the '89 cars. On the page with the seats, etc. you can see the wiring connections needed for the memory mirrors. Jumper the hot wire and (maybe) the ground wire for those connections, using a 12 or 14 pin connector with the male pins (like are on the seat connections). DON'T buy a new connector, as they are frightfully expensive, however!!!!!

Cheers, and if you need more info, send me an e-mail and I'll get you more info from my WSM circuit diagrams.

Gary: Thanks. Yeah, me and wiring diagrams are not good buddies. I stared at them. I'll try again to spot the connections that need to be jumpered.

Bill,

I'll get to my shop manuals today and get back to you with the connections necessary to keep the mirrors functioning and their memory in tact. Now - that assumes I can get MY memory to function effectively!!! - HA.

Bill,

The connections I made that allowed the power mirrors and their memory to function when there was no power seat installed are: (again - jumpers from the female connection for the seats by the tunnel).

Ground connection made between pin 1 and pin 12 (brown ~1mm wire)

Positive power connection made between pin 2 and pin 14 (red/white 0.5 to 1mm wire)

When I made these connections, the mirrors always functioned with either my non power Porsche sport seats, or the Recaro SRD's installed.

Hope this is helpful.

Cheers,

Does that seat lower you any overall in relation to the roof? I have to practically sit in an astronaut launch position with a helmet on, and I still slightly brush the sunroof / headliner.

Bill, now that you know for sure that those crappy ol' original seats don't need to be put back in whenever you need to adjust your mirrors, maybe it's time to think about finding them a good home...

Bill,

Glad it worked. I agree - I'm not an electrical engineer, and it takes me a while to follow MOST of the circuit diagrams in the WSM's. Wish I was better at it too.

bill anyway you could take a picture of the power seats you removed. I have an ongoing issue with a seat stuck in the all way back position and it would be nice to see a picture of the rail system in a top down position.
