I have massive wheel hop in my 85 5 speed with LSD (2.75) if I am very aggressive. If I pedal the launch a bit I can get a nice hook up with out the hop.
I always was curious what would happen if I were to pin the rear axel. It's one of those things I figured I would have to endure with the Weisach rear axel?
Thoughts?

It is funny that this thread came up now, I was just looking at a manual S4 and one thing I didn't like was the wheel hop when spinning in the wet. Not very graceful for such a expensive car! I have always considered wheel hop something for the cheap GM cars with solid rear axle, not expensive German engineering.
I have never experienced this with my own car, just a smooth transition from nongrip to grip. I have konis. I am not sure if the S4 had LSD.

actually.. now that I think of it...
When I first got my car (bone stock 86.5 5spd), it had LOTS of wheel hop. In fact, I took off hard from a light once, and in the midst of the wheel hop - the pssgr side CV-joint grenaded (assuming it was from additional stress of the hopping)
After I got the supercharger (extra 70hp @ the crank or so), i had significantly less wheel hop, but it was still there.
I ditched my rain/snow/road tires, and got a pair of bfg t/a KDs for the rear (best dry traction street tire i've ever used btw), and I can't think of a time i've had wheel hop since then. I used to fear the wheel hop because of the cv-joint incident, but no longer.

I know spinning the wheels is not the most effective way of getting along, I just have a feeling that something is wrong when it happens. I also have a feeling it has something to do with the "give" in the Weissach axle.
