Post Rear wheel hop under acceleration

Any one else get wheel hop when breaking the tires loose, particularly in the wet? All the usual stuff seems ok eg. tire balance, shocks. The previous owner said he replaced the torque tube.the driveline seems a little snatchy.. i don't know if this is normal... any ideas? Darrin.

Cool

I don't just get wheel hop when I get on it in the wet Spode...the whole damn thing just spins right out!

These things are a little bit of a handfull in the wet. My '85 S2 5 Speed [310 hp] develops axle hop if I'm not carefull, and I am running 275/40-17 Bridgestone RE730's.

Yes, I have the same thing.

My first drive in the wet caught my attention. The rear hops violently when the tires break loose and steps out very quickly when accelerating out of a corner.

I don't think my limited slip diff is helping. Also, I'm not sure how good my Kuhmo 712's are in the wet.

I think I'll stick with my Audi S4 for wet weather commutes.

What's your tire pressure at?. If your 1/4 m bracket racing - drop a few psi. Wheel hop should be minimized and maybe eliminated.

Any time I break 'em loose, be it wet or dry, I get terrible wheel hop. Feels like it going to shake the car apart. Obviously I try not to break them loose much anymore. :-) I've checked with a few other 928'ers who have had similar experiences. One fellow has both an '80 Euro 5 speed, and an '89 GT. He spins the tires on the '80 fairly regularly, and has NO wheel hop. After hearing me complain about my GT doing this, he went and tested out his '89 GT and had bad wheel hop. Not sure why the '80 doesn't and the '89 does??? BTW, he's running stock wheels on both, not sure of his tire sizes. I'm running 18" AT Rivas w/ Kuhmo 712's (225/35 F and 275/35 R)

Spode,

That's what I heard when the CVs in my 951 went south. It was a very obvious clicking under power that started suddenly.

I actually replaced them with some good used assemblies which cured the clicking.

I've always get wheel hop in my GTS unless the road surface is very smooth - shaved down concrete or old smoothed-out asphalt. I never had any wheel hop in my '85 but I couldn't spin the wheels either with the auto box!

No wheel hop in my '86, but it is all stock. With Proxies I don't spin much at all in wet weather, only if I really get on it, and still no wheel hop. Now in the Mustang I get all kinds of wheel hop.

Bring back a dead thread,
On my '80 model I get bad wheel hop, like tonight I was coming home from my g/f's house, and I was in 2nd gear, at about 3k, nailed it and wheel hop bad, headlights shaking and everything. It was kinda wet out, but not bad, its done it before in the dry also, I have Koni reds in the back, not sure how old they are. What can I do to fix this?

I'd try lowering rear tire pressure a bit.

I haven't tried any burnouts in the wet....but a couple times in the dry I have had "less than ideal" drag launches....where you get waaaayyy to much smoke and not enough GO....fun but not fast....both times it is always dead smooth....never a hint of hope? Now I went a jinxed myself...now I'll have a hopping monster next time I try it!

I thought this is a function of the suspension in that the shocks are not damping the vibration that is occuring and thus you end up dribbling or hopping the tires. Fo those that are/are not having this issue, how old are your shocks? My bet is those that have the problem, have old shocks. Those that don't, have newer shocks.

Edit: Forgot to add my experience here. Shocks are original and I get bad hop under intense acceleration. I plan to replace this winter.
