Window Motor or the Regulator
Hey all,
The passenger window won't go down on my '79. I checked the switch and it's okay, so I guess it is now time to go into the door. I haven't done this before, so how will I know if it's the regulator or the motor?
Thanks,

Go to the Nichols site
<a href="http://www.nichols.nu/tip028.htm" target="_blank">http://www.nichols.nu/tip028.htm</a>
and read up on removing the door panel and repairing the window motor.

I didn't read the link but both motors on my 79 were stuck. The motors are pretty easy to take out and once out they come right apart. I lubed mine at the pivot points with lithium grease and cleaned the commutators with green scotch brite. They work fine now.

Hai,
In addition to Wally and Karl's suggestions, check the wires where they go through the door and check the motor transmission. Another lister found that his wires were frayed and shorting. On my 78 US the transmission grease had hardened to the consistancy of plastic and was causing the gears to jam.

I had the problem with frayed wires where the door and the car come together, inside the little plastic conduit. Checked the switch connection, it was ok. Checked for power at the motor, no power.
Traced the wires back to the frayed area and found BOTH the wires that go to motor where bad. Note that one wire was visibily bad, the other one was bad (broken) but the plastic that covered the wire was not broken!!! Also note that of the 30 wires going into the door, only these two wires for the window seem to be damaged. These two are larger diameter than the others.
Nichols site is excellent for instructions on how to remove the door panel, although I haven't put the door back together yet.
Hope things go well.

Thanks all. I really appreciate your help and suggestions. I pulled the door panel off today. I'll check the wires tomorrow and pull out the motor also if needed. You guys are all great.

Okay, now I have the motor out and I had to pop off the plate to get to the gears. They were packed in rust. Anyway, I think I broke the rivets, or whatever holds it on. Any ideas for me?
Thanks,

Hai,
They should be screws instead of rivets but, considering the rust, it may be hard to tell. Try soaking them in a penetrating lubricant to see if they will free up. Wire brush the rust off everything to get a measure of how damaged/pitted the gears have become. May be time for a good used or new one from one of the big three.
