Ok, I got overzealous after SITM to fix the oil in the V problem. Pretty sure it was gasket failure for the oil/filler neck area. This was also causing oil on the hoodliner problem as well and oil was collecting in the stud/nut holes on the head.

Here's the problem, I THINK a washer dropped into the oil pan when I tried to remove the oil filler housing. It was one of the washers on the 10m bolts that hold down that housing.

I say I *think* because I dropped the bolt too! But I recovered the bolt with a long magnet. However it didn't have a washer on it. However, I did find another washer that looks like the correct washer based on the other bolt and washer was in a plausble vincinity when found.

What do I do???

The snorkel should have a mesh at the end. Objects like a washer can't be sucked into the oil pump. But the experts here can tell you more.

You most likely found the washer anyhow.

I once dropped a small bolt in the pan of my 944. I drove the car with the bolt in the pan about 30000 km or 2 years, inlcuding Autobahn. No problems at all.

Below is a picture of the 944 snorkel, your 928 will be similar.

If that gets sucked into the oil pump it will probably lock up the pump and strip teeth off the belt. I know, it shouldn't be able to get in there but I know of at least one shark that sucked up a washer this way. Wasn't pretty. I know there is a mesh over the pickup, but it really did happen somehow. I forget what year car it was.

I assume that the lubrication system of the 928 is similar to the 944.

I have that setup plus gts oil baffle...that may or may not mean much...

I drained the oil as this is how I found the bolt. I wan't able to pickup anything else though...

Brad...either you have the right washer or you already have proof that a washer in the pan won't leave the pan.

In all honesty, though, I lost a washer down into the pan and ended up removing the pan to get it.

Take a strong magnite and pass ot over the bottom surface of the oil pan slowly. cover the whole area. When done, glue the magnite to the oil pan in the last position it was in. At least the washer, if it is in there, will stay in that place.

Gretch, I was thinking about the magnet idea. I was thinking if I could 'guide' the washer near the drain hole, I could take my other magent to try and 'grab' it...

My 81 did not come with mesh on the end of the snorkel. The factory did not add this until much later. Ask me how I found this out

The factory OB pan does have mesh over the opening under the rod bearings (where the GTS baffle sits on later cars). So if this pan were original, the washer would not make it past thie screen. This screen is so close to the crankshaft, I'd be worred about the washer getting kicked up into the motor.

This is not the case for his car, but for future reference, no screen on the snorkel on OB's.

This won't help now, but for anyone removing pan they might consider leaving magnets in the pan. When I changed ATF filter on a 2000 Sienna, I found Toyota puts 3 flat (3/4x1x3/16") loose mags equidistant in the pan. They had fur (filings). I cleaned them, and returned them to their home. YMMV.

I've checked and checked...and will double check the rods and crank. I haven't seen anything. I will also be hand turning the crank to see if I hear anything also. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I've found the washer already though...
