Speaking of connecting rods. I remember it wasn't all that long ago a few well known guru's claimed the stock S4 rods could only take 350-400hp or so before they would fail. That for any real hp gains you must install 951 rods.

That "rumor" has been blown out of the water by a factor of atleast 50.

The PET shows the part number for the connecting rods as 928.103.008.04 usually the last number shows a revision or update to the original part number.

Does anyone have the part numbers off the rods from a 92-93 GTS to see if they are 00, 01, etc.

I have requested my deposit back . It is not worth the risk and money involved. Also ,if it was someone on here that filled the salesman's ears with all the "It's worth far more than that " , " your selling that car too cheap, It's worth over 30g's" ****, I just wanna say thanks for helping screw this deal up for me.

What happened? You asked for a discount due to the mileage and they said no?

IIRR rods do not have part number in them, just casting number and stamped 5,4 to differenciate them from 968 rods which has S3 stamped.

Sorry to hear that someone screwed it up for you but IIRC properly you are probably better off. A great color like Amazon green is hard to find but if it has the mileage it does I am sure it is beyond tired. I can't find the thread discussing this car back in 05 but I recall it being beyond tired back then and can only be worse now.

Keep you eyes open there is always another one around the corner.

Oh well, so there may be no answer to this unless we can find a set of rods and picture them side by side.

I want to add that that

Sometime I come across good deals on ebay but I don't post about them until the auction is over just not to ruin the deal that someone may be getting. If I am not buying it, why not give someone else get a break on getting a good deal.

Kevin or whoever asked why it is cheap: I think you have your answer. Personally, I think you should take and pay for a rebuild, still cheap.

Greg: Not to jump on you; you have some rep here but it's not cool to make such a statement w/o some backup, maybe on some other crap site where hearsay is the daily bread, but not here. Kim is some sort of source, but according to Chuck his statement is way vague and totally hearsay. I hate this kind of stuff, not just b/c I'm an owner.

Maybe this will help (see attachments). BTW, from my direct experiance most early GTS that had a problem with the c-rods usually had the issue early on. Most failed before 20K miles and the ones that passed that mileage seemed to be OK.

Sometimes all it takes is one post on Rennlist and the sales guy gets like 100 calls about the car....probably thinks...shoot....priced it too low..and the sales vulture plays the potential buyers against one another...

A local here in the pacnw...went to go look at a euro advertised for $2500...(guy had set it up to meet prospective buyers at a parking lot )....our guy got up there....looked at it..said..I'll take it for the $2500...and the seller said..ok...as he was walking away..another person went up to the seller..and offered 3k...and the seller switched and then sold it to the new guy... yea..of course..no contract..etc..but usually a handshake on a deal meant something....not nowadays. With ebay etc..its a crazy game out there...

later,
tom

Thanks

Good to hear hopefully won't be an issue now that I am at 61k miles and the engine is running strong.

Do some research on Greg before you blast him. He is one of, if not the most respected 928 mechanics (all Porsche for that matter) around and knows his stuff. He doesn't post crap. His knowledge of these cars is priceless to the community. Posts like this drive knowledgable people away from the site because they don't want to deal with the crap.

Greg may chime in himself but I can tell you that I have seen a motor at his shop where all the rods were bent and it still ran.
