That is a tough one Kevin. Maybe it will make it a much easier choise once you see the car. Are they willing to let you take it out for a PPI? I certainly would want to assure myself there was no thrust bearing damage and at least do a compression leak down test. Maybe you'll get there and discover it needs a Timing Belt, Torque Tube, Steering Rack and a Transmission. Decision just got real easy.

It doesn't state they sell Carfax certified cars (some do) but there is a Carfax icon on their website: http://www.westplexmotors.com/faqaboutus/ ... interesting.
Time to ask yourself if you are looking at the car because you want a GTS or because you want it for the price. Being the beginning of the month and of the numerous inquiries they got on the car (or what not), I doubt they will go down on the price.

Remember..if Greg B is correct the engine may have been replace under warranty...or perhaps a previous owner payed for it...take a look at the engine code area..make sure it's a GTS motor..and if a replacement motor the engine number plate may be blank (Adam B has a motor like this)...or there will be some hand scribed or stamped number there..different from the stock stamp..
Good luck..

P.S. Also..carfax is not..not even close on some cars...they get records from a variety of places..(emissions testing etc)...the data is only as good as the person who is recording it...I can't say how many times they've asked for my mileage...and I tell them...295,000 km...of course some will ask..whats that in miles..(rough conversion recorded)..or forbid they record the 295km as miles..
Good luck..

I think if you are serious about the car, and knowing that the milage may be high, have a very complete PPI done. I mean a complete full day or two day PPI. Who knows, if it checks out you could end up with a nice cheap GTS that's got another 100K plus miles left in her.
Or...with a ****ty PPI you'll end up with a headache for sometime to come.
Kevin...you've been around the block...so, no PPI...no car. I love that color tho!!!
PS...what's with the 93' connecting rod story????????????

Kim Crumb mentioned this to me several years ago. At the time, he sent me some info from Porsche. Might have been a TSB? Can't remember for sure in any case its not the first time I've heard this. If anyone would know it would be Greg B.

Like Chuck, I recall comments about the GTS rods from the 928 email list several years ago. I did a quick search, and here are some of the quotes:
The bold sections are my emphasis added. I'll leave it to others to opine on how serious an issue this is. Hope this helps...

Body: The 474 option IS only sport shocks. Not a "sport suspension." Which is
why I've spent so much time dabbling with springs and shocks over the
years... kinda recreating what a real factory sport suspension (typically
an M030 option code, if you look at other Porsche models) would have been.
Oh the GTS manual does a 13.7 quarter mile, the GT a 14.1 the '89 S4
14.2. I'd take a GTS in a blink, except for all the money. Well, I'd
stick to an '94 or '95 with the better rods...probably no problem getting
groceries...but I probably would be at the track before I even got home
with the car! Kim

Subject: Forged components
Body: There is a lot of confusion regarding forged components in the type 928.
The only "forged" pistons are in GTS. All others are cast and in many
cases, have visible weaknesses.
Other than the gts, all rods are "sinter" forged, or powder metal technology
and not true forgings.
The only real forged rods are in a GTS. The only good forged rods are the
ones in a 94 and later GTS, in all 92-93 gts's - porsche recommends that
they be changed any time the engine is dis-assembled for any reason...same
for a 968!
The cranks of the non GTS are all 6 counter weight and non-twisted forged.
The porsche stroker, the gts, is an 8 counterweight and forged.
The DEVEK stroker crank is a 8 counterwieght and made (carved) from an
English billet forging.

Drifting
I'm going to be in the area of the car tomarrow, I can take the digital camera if anyone here is interested...maybe even be allowed to drive it, but I doubt they'd let it out if there is a deposit holding it.

Would it be like the 2/6 bearings where a particular type of stress is required, or would it be more a factor of age and hours of use?
For peace of mind I'm going to assume it requires many hours of driving in reverse, in excess of 70 miles per hour. :>)

Anyone have pics of '94-95 GTS or 968 rods? What is different in them? '94 MY yearly changes document do not mention any changes. Maybe this was done after MY started. Usually mid year changes end up in next years document.
