Amen! Thanks DR!

But this must cause some kind of shutter or imbalance?

+1
I'd be tempted to trailer my car from Idaho all the way to California just to get at Greg's expertise. Many of the best have said that he's that good.

I think you were way better off not buying that car. That is not worth anywhere near 30k. Most people that pay that kind of money want a good history of the car. Not even carfax could verify the history of that car. Sketchy mileage, previous talk on rennlist about it being tired, no records, and an auto. To tell you the truth I don't see what the car had going for it. I would take a low mileage S4/GT over a ragged out GTS anyday, but thats me.. There was high mileage red GTS that was for sale on ebay and that guy couldn't get rid of it at $23-$24k and that one was at least carfax certified with records.

WOW, no way Mark. How bent were these rods? Is that something that you look at and its very obviously bent, or you can only tell when measuring them out of the engine and looking at the rods side by side with new ones or something.

There are a lot of “it must be tired” or “with that mileage it has to be really worn out” comments. Has anybody actually looked at this car? Even if it has 200K, if the car was used as a long distance commuter car, the condition could be much better than a city driven with same mileage. There is just too much speculation going on. Someone near by should do a quick look and settle most of this.

Yes it was obvious and could be seen with the naked eye. They were slightly S shaped.

I have to agree. I've seen rod bearings from a 150,000+ 928 engine that looked new - cylinders had full compression. I've seen 928's with 50,000 miles that "looked" perfect that were basket cases.

I've also seen a fare share of engines that were running just fine with bent rods. As long as they are not hitting anything - the engine will run, just on lower compression. Most recenty a Z car that tried to be a U-Boat. All 6 bent, car ran, just with less power than before.

There was a thread about this car the last time it was for sale in 05. I tried finding it but no luck. I recall it specifically because the car is the same color as mine and Chuck's site only shows 9 in total so far with just a handful in each year. I did a lot of research on this color and the cars made when I purchased mine.

This was the car and the pictures used on the Ebay ad.

You can see it is the same car and has the same arm rest. When I spoke to my wife about it she remembers it implicitly and recalled their being many issues also. I also recall someone taking a look at it and giving it the thumbs down. From the pics of the interior it looks like someone spent money and had it freshened up a little since.

It's interesting that in the two years since the Registry photos the amp gage still does not work but the oir pressure at idle has improved by a bar.

Getting warmer but no. If you read one of my posts I repeated what I had said earlier in this post about this car. So the original post must have been sometime in 05 since this was in 06.

I could have gone to see the car today and posted some pics but I didn't see any intrest from the community since my last post. Those pics might have helped this discussion maybe.

I'm guess I'm the minority here. A running, straight, 10 foot GTS for $16,000? What am I missing here? Not everyone wants a garage queen.

Even if the engine "needs work" drop in an S4 motor with a blower. You are still under $25k for a GTS with over 450 - 500hp.

That must be the perfect senerio. Lets not forget if the car has over 200k miles the torque tube bearings, transmission, and suspension have to be pretty tired. To many variables for me to consider. I have been there once with a high mileage 951. By the time you get everything up to snuff I should have just bought the pristine example to begin with..
