From model year '90 on, manufacturers were required to install either airbags, or these motorized belts in their US models. Thank god, Porsche chose the airbags, and Mazda put the motorized belts into the RX-7. Otherwise I might have bought another RX-7...
The first Porsche to be standard equiped with airbags was the 1989 944 S2.

The 928 got dual airbags in 1990. It was not an option before that. This required a new dash for 90'. It's MUCH nicer than the old dashes. It's smoother and has a slick hidden glovebox. It still looks like a new design. This new dash is the main reason I am considering buying a 90' over an 89'.

Hmm, I keep reading that the first car sold in the US with dual standard airbags was the 1987 944 Turbo. I'll try to find a citation.... Well, there's this.
