Post Supercharged S3

OK,
I'm going to start this thread by itself.

I am going to supercharge my 1985 928S AT.
My main priority is street manners and trouble free operation. Sound crazy? - then stop me now....

I have access to all the parts I need to do this project. This is not a FAST install. Once I get the job done, I'll expand on the entire setup. Its gotta work first or else you'll never hear about it from me again.
What I mean by that is that I want a street car not a drag car. I want my wife to be able to pick up groceries in the thing and then take it out for a hoot whenever I want. I think its do-able.

I would like to keep this string focused on the S3 model for now. Other MY's should start a separate string to avoid confusion between different owners. Especially when it comes to fuel/air management.

That being said, who already has a 32v AT supercharged? - anyone?
Or will mine be the first.

Stay Tuned.

Bernie,

A couple of years ago I had only had my 928 for about 6 months, and I jumped into the supercharger thing head first. I had never done anything remotely this complex to a car (although it's actually simple.) At the time, I only knew of a couple of cars out there with blowers (Tilo, a guy in Atlanta, and the FAST 85.) But, I figured what the hell. It's taken two years of screwing around with the setup, but I could NEVER have a NA 928 again.

I understand your concern about drivability, but the blower is allot like nitrous in that it's only there when you need it. Just cruising around, it's actually more of a parasite than a boost, and you really have to nail it to get it going (especially with the auto tyranny.) Once you get any issues with belts, pulleys, and vacuum worked out (if you end up having any issues), the car will be as reliable and easy to drive to the store as it is now....and allot more fun if you decide you feel like playing around!

There's one supercharged '85 with an automatic transmission out there that I know of. <a href="http://www.marcus3.com/porsche_page/porsche_page.html" target="_blank">http://www.marcus3.com/porsche_page/porsche_page.html</a>

Yea, that's Marcus Hutchinson. Marcus, Tim Murphy and myself were all doing our initial installs at about the same time. Marcus has done a really nice job with his entire setup.

I'm with you on this project, Bernie. Marcus' project is nice and all, but is NOT what I have in mind AT ALL, and I doubt it's Bernie's thing, either. <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" />

My concept if to huff a "bone stock" S3 928, automatic car. I'll tweak the "systems" of the car a bit to accomodate the blower, but there will NOT be any fancy engine work allowed. I'd even consider relocating the MAF ahead of the huffer, but that's about as fancy as I'm willing to get. If this won't fly, I want to find out about it BEFORE I start throwing a bunch of $$$$ at the thing. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Hey Randy,

Thanks for keeping up with this thread.
Maybe a really good starting point would be the list of the hardware basics for us to mull over. I know the majors:
supercharger
bracket
pulley
blow-off valve
plumbing
But I would like to know all the little bits needed to put this together. Remember that I am not interested in a intercooler at this time. I want to go straight from the blower to the intake without anything too fancy. A good question would be "how stock can I leave the car and still have a successful installation?"

Someone posted on the other thread that 40lb injectors were not a requirement. Would it be possible to do this with standard sized injectors that have been flowed / matched?

Cheers

Bernie:
Both F.A.S.T. and Projekt928 suggest that the #24 injectors, with rising-rate regulators and high pressure fuel pump, are the appropriate units for the 4-5 lb boost 928. Apparently, the 1985-86 928's came with those, while newer ones (S4's) came with #19 inectors. Both of the above companies recommend swapping the #19 units for #24 units of either Bosch or Ford Mustang source.

Good Info Brian.

I am going to have my injectors flowed and matched to prepare for the supercharger onslaught

I also have questions concerning cooling. We are going to loose our big viscous fan and the shroud setup to do this. That means airflow is going to be an issue. Even with aftermarket low-profile fans, we still loose the directive characteristics of the shroud itself. Something to consider.
I also need to address a troublefree method of oiling the blower. I have seen a few different setups. Notice I keep saying "troublefree"?

We need to source out the fuel management equipment. Don't want to spend big $$$$ on this. Equipment to handle this job and thats it.

Cool

Derrek,

Will your new setup fit under a stock hood? Regardless, I can't wait to see the results.

I wasn't to impressed with marcus3 operation when I went to visit in november of 2002. Marcus is bull****ting a good friend of mine on a blower 928 motor he paid for almost 2 YEARS ago. He paid marcus in full, maybe marcus used my friends money to help build someones elses 928 motor who knows? A lot of stories still no MOTOR.

BERNIE: I'm only stating facts not stories. This thread is about 928 supercharger engines. BTW: Bernie did you buy rennlist from John D? If so do I need to mail my rennlist membership renewel to you.

George,

Are you sure you mean Marcus and not someone else? Marcus doesn't do work on other people's cars, he is just a regular guy with another job like most of us...I don't even think he has a shop since he has someone else do the work on his car.
