Newbie close to buying 928 has a couple of questions
Hello all, my first post here.
I'm a 42 year old Dane who's been eyeing the 928 for quite a while. Have looked for a car for about ½ a year now, but haven't been able to find one in Denmark that I wanted to buy (Almost all for sale are automatics, and I want a manual, either S4, GT or GTS)
Believe I have found a good '91 GT in Germany now, if the seller's description holds true and the photos don't lie:
I have larger versions of the photos if anyone is interested, but have tried to adhere to the pic-posting outlines given in the faq.
Could do without the red piping on the seats which is a bit too garish for me, but am hoping it might be possible to dye it black. Milage is 169.000km or just over 100.000 miles
Have yet to see the car in the flesh, as there's a fair bit of distance between me and it, but hopefully next week...
Could ask a gazillion questions, but will try to limit myself a bit..
I'm puzzled by the rear panel which apparently only has the 'Porsche' writing. I thought they would normally also contain either '928 S4' or '928 GT'. Have been speculating if it was reason to become suspicious about the car's identity, but have seen several photos in this forum where cars are without that writing too.
It is my intention to use the car as my daily driver. Is this feasible, or should I rather have myself committed right away... ?
Since it's equipped with airbags but is after all 16 years old, I've been trying to find out if Porsche has a replacement interval on airbags like some car manufacturers have. Wrote a local Porsche dealership about it, but they didn't reply. Does anyone here know about this issue ?
I absolutely love the wheels on the car, but after seeing some threads about rusted rim bolts on very similar looking rims, my spirit sank a bit. Can anyone here tell if the wheels on the car are similar to those with rusted bolts, or are there more than one version/manufacturer of these ?
Have noticed a couple of other Danes posting in the forum. If anyone can recommend a good place to have the car serviced and looked after, I'd be most interested in hearing about it. I'm located in Nordsjaelland.
Thanks for looking and thanks in advance for any replies - hope I can join the owner's circle soon
Regards,
Erling Groes-Petersen

Sport seats with red piping, I'd leave them alone, pretty rare. Do the rear seats have the red piping also?
"model designation delete" was actually an option, so your's may have come from the factory without the "928 GT" emblem/sticker on the rear bumper cover. Nothing to worry about.
Looks like a nice ride, good luck with the purchase if you buy it.

Sport seats, leave them alone, and learn to like red(yes, rear seats have piping too). The RDK is bypassed with the aftermarket wheels. The chrome "V8" emblem on the rear hatch must go, hope it's only glued on. You fuel economy will not be as good with the GT as with the S4, so fuel costs will be somewhat higher. They do NOT handle snow very well, despite the primitive traction control of PSD, so that might be a consideration in Denmark.
These are first generation airbags. when they were first offered, no one thought to put a life limit on them. I also tried to get an answer from Porsche NA in the US but they just said, 'you're on your own' with the airbag issue. Nothing to share on rusted wheel bolts, or the rear logo. My 90GT just says "PORSCHE" in relief script like this one. You can get aftermarket lettering to add the GT or 928GT.
Welcome, best of luck.

Model designation delete option was probably more common than not.
Sport seats! They may have been recovered - I've not seen that much puckering in original leather. It looks very fresh. It's better than having worn out leather.
The clear front signal lenses and spacers are a nice aftermarket touch. I have them too.
The car looks very clean, although I'd like to see the engine compartment too. The rear quarter and hatch glass appears to be tinted, and I can't make out any rear quarter interior panel warping.
This looks like a keeper if the mechanicals are good.

Thanks everyone for the replies and thoughts; much appreciated.
Seller claims it to be like new inside and out. He agreed to having a Porsche inspection done pre-purchase (when I go there). I imagined a very thorough test of everything, but it's apparantly a more superficial affair. Based on the seller's description, a Porsche mechanic will check that everything on the car is working and go for a test drive in it. Would you guys settle for this, or do I need to insist on more than this ?
Guess I'll leave the red piping alone - it also takes away the problem of recoloring it, lol
Docmirror; yes, agree completely about that 'V8' badge. Seller claims it's from the previous owner and should be easy to remove. Hope he's right.
RDK ? Let me guess: 'Reifen druck kontrolle' or something like that; is it the low tyre pressure warning system that I have read about causing lots of trouble ?
With regards to fuel economy, the bunch of old test reports from Autocar and other car magazines I've read seems to suggest that the GT is the worst of the lot. Is it signicificantly worse than the S4 and do you get anything in return ? (10 hp more seems like awfully little, in relative terms)
Am seriously considering getting a little, used eco-runabout to handle the winter driving and save a little on the fuel bill too. Don't like the prospect of having to keep two cars running though, so have to do a little calculating on this.
Forgot to ask in my first post: what about aftermarket rust-proofing, like Dinitrol etc ?
Have read lots about 928s so far, but can't remember ever seeing anything about this mentioned.
Really hope I can get to see the car next week and take it home if nothing scares me away. Have a bit of trouble falling asleep lately, lol.
Thanks again guys,
Erling Groes-Petersen

Forget about rust-proofing. The body is galvanized except for the doors, front fenders and hood, which are aluminum. Rust-proofing won't protect the edges of the panels around the windows - that's the most common rust site. And it won't protect the suspension parts. Get a winter beater car.

By Erling: Based on the seller's description, a Porsche mechanic will check that everything on the car is working and go for a test drive in it.
The only acceptable PPI is from someone who is an expert on 928's, not just on porsche's, and not affiliated with the seller.
