Post Old 928 gets respect from Riceburner

Hey guys,

I just got my 928 back from the shop after having been serviced for a little over a week. General preventative maintenance: all belts replaced, new water pump, all fluid flush, etc. Big bill in the end as we all are unfortunately familiar with, but very happy with the way my shark feels. Feels like it's awake from being asleep for years from the PO who never drove the thing. Anyway, I feel I have to tell you guys how I did versus a late model Eclipse GSX turbo just because of my poor performance with a Ford Escort in my previous post. This eclipse had a complete rice package. Gigantic exhaust tip, wing, etc. I am just cruising about 60 on I95 on the slow lane, until a guy pulls up with his loud exhaust. He instigates by revving and nudging while pacing me side by side and checking my shark out. Why does this always happen to me? Of all days, the first day I get my car out of the shop. Anyway, I got sick of it, and nailed the throttle partial way. The Eclipse got stuck behind a bunch of cars and was squirming in and out just to catch up to me. At that point I was done. Just wanted to cruise at 60 on the slow lane. Eventually he caught up and pulled beside me again. This time the road was open. He nudged first and nailed it. Then I followed, but this time I actually kicked down, and Bwaaaah. I was gone. His car was pretty quick, but when my shark went Bwaah, it just walked right past him even with his head start and screaming turbocharged 4 banger. I think he eventually gave up after I passed him to save from further embarassment. I am really impressed by the shark's performance with the kickdown now. I've felt kickdown before, but it feels a bit stronger now and more willing to kick down more often. It still doesn't kick down every time I want it to, but most of the time it will when I ask for it. Anyway, I just felt I had to tell you about my incident to make my shark feel better after the whole Escort challenge.

Question

FYI some individuals and about half the state of California see the term "riceburner" as racist. You might want to take that into consideration in a public, international forum such as this. I mean, the car doesn't burn rice, so what is the meaning?

it is interesting that one of the odd things about a "shark" is its propensity to be an "a$$ hole magnet". I don't know what it is, but for years I have experienced these pissants "buzzing" me. I usually just ignore them, but every once in a great while..............

And it is ALWAYS shocking the extent to which, when provoked, an a$$ kickin gets delivered.....

I get the exact opposite reaction to my 928 in traffic. A lot of those types seem to be pretty intimidated when I encounter them.

Hey Gretch, you are from Boston too? What part? I'm in the South Shore. Just to clarify on the riceburner, I did not intend any kind of racist remarks through calling a lowered Eclipse with obnoxiously huge body package and obnoxiously loud and huge exhaust a riceburner. I am somewhat in tune to these import hot rods and that is what many people call them. Just check out the magazing Import Racing. I'm sure you'll find the word rice-burner there. "Rice-burners" are given their name because mostly the young Asian crowd drives them and they never eat as much gas as muscle cars or sharkowners such as ourselves do. Anyway, what do you refer to them as, if not riceburners?? Just curious now that I have to be careful not to be racist towards cars.

Mike,
You must have a mean looking 928. Most normal people generally leave me alone on the road or slow down to check my shark out, but if it's a car that's been either aesthetically tuned or tuned under the hood, I am almost guaranteed somone who will want a piece. I don't know why. I am on the slow lane most of the time and mt car is visually and mostly under the hood stock. Oh well, maybe it's just cuz it's a Porsche.

928Benz, it is another poster who has the problem with your "rice burner" tag, not me.

My 89 GT (Gretch) is black and all stock, cept for the wheels which I upgraded to 17 inch Cup wheels.

"Gretch" is semi-retired and lives in the mountains of NH, whereas her driver lives in Boston.

Sorry Gretch, I meant to direct the riceburner to Steve. It's funny, seems like a lot of 928s reside in NH. Most of the sharks I checked out during my sharkhunting days were in NH. Most were in beautiful condition on the exterior, but horrible everywhere else. I got lucky and found an excellent low mileage one just last month from Pelham. It was in such superior condition compared to the several I had checked out in the past 6 months in NH, that I bought it immediately after the test drive. Awesome car. Better suited for NH roads I think, less the snow. When I drove my shark home to Boston, I quickly forgot how nice of a cruiser the 928 was on the highway as soon as I was greeted by the famous potholes of Boston.

928Benz,

Glad to hear that your car is working the way Porsche meant it to. A few years ago, I had the same thing happen to me. The kickdown switch stopped working and...well, you know the rest.

Just an FYI: The term "rice burner" has been around since the early 70s (as I can remember). It dosen't refer to an individual's/driver's ethnic background...it refers to the car's make (vehicle's country of origin). The phrase was around long before the "import tuning" crowd was even born.

I tease my buddy about this all time...I tell him that his car (mr2 turbo) would go much quicker if he put yellow decals all over it. He dosen't have an issue with it others may. Either way, no racial undertones are implied.

Hey Mike S -

I think the black car has a bit to do with it.

Either they don't see it, or if they do, they might either be intimidated, or simply not understand what it is.

Since i have moved to San Diego, I have started a kind of camoflage (sic) program where if I will be going long distances at high speeds, I will not wash the vehicle. Nobody notices, nobody flashes (in SoCal, specifically San Diego, people flash at me when the deem my traveling rate as too fast). But the SECOND I get those wheels cleaned up (basic S4 flats, but mirror chrome), there goes the stealth.

Its harder to get the "jump" in a 5spd, as they will hear me downshifting even if I do it "subtly". With your autos, you just punch it.

Roger,
I am not sure what it was with the kickdown, but the car I purchased had been only driven about 2000 miles total since 1992. The only receipt I had was a t-belt and water pump from that date. When my mechanic flushed the tranny fluid, he told me the fluid was completely black. I don't know much about fixing cars, but I guess that's a bad thing. Yeah it was, good thing is tranny feels so much healthier and kicks down a lot more often. I am very happy with it. Still curious about the 1st gear start conversion though. Hmmm? I wonder who offers those conversions? The MR2 comment about putting more stickers to make the car go faster is a funny one. Most of my friends are of Asian descent and they of course take pride in tuning their rice-burners. They enjoy enhancing a small engine to put out its maximum potential just for the sheer joy of waving as they are blowing past Corvettes or Porsches in Honda Preludes or MR2's. We all do get a kick out of the wannabe rice tuners who slap on an "R" or "S" sticker on a plain model just for the hopes that people will think it goes faster. In Boston, the major one is an "M3" badge on a BMW 318i with stock rims and a nasty exhaust. I had the pleasure of roasting this wannabe in my sister's Turbo Volvo. That was hilarious.

Except for the GTS style wheels on it, my car looks completely stock. I'd guess if anything, the sound of the exhaust might have something to do with it. During normal driving, it's not even close to loud by any means, but the tone does say "this ain't no six cylinder"

Concerning adding stickers :

I hear in Kentucky they put mud flaps on their cars to make them go faster. Outside of Kentucky we refer to them as Kentucky-go-fasters

Of course all my friends in Kentucky understand that it is just an affectionate statement from one of those D-Yankees
