911 vs 928 comparison article
Worth checking out in 911 & Porsche World February 2003. They ran an 89 911 cab against a 90 GT, had some nice and some not so nice things to say about the 928, overall a reasonably balanced comparison, worth the price just for the good pics. They picked the 911 over the 928, go figure, I mean the magazine is called 911 and (btw) Porsche world. Also a pretty funny article about a doctor repeatedly wrecking his 928. Enjoy the read, I found it at Border's.

That article about the doctor is from none other than our own Terry Thomas (PacNW 928). He is starting to become a regular contributor to 911 and Porsche World and promises another 928 installment in the future. The editor also mentions in his column that he is in danger of becoming a fan of the 928....
Definitly a mag to pick up...
There is also an article in the March 03 "Classic and Sports Car"..another brit mag.. on the 928..entitled..Porsche 928s4..GT Giant for pin money... at $8.25 ...a little steep, but nice reading...

Ah,
But the image of the 928 lives right here my friend. Living with the people who care and feed for them.
No one will ever convince me that a 928 is one ounce less than any other Porsche ever produced...
IMHO
Of Course

That article points out the essential difference between the 928 and 911: One is a sports car and the other is a GT.
-The 911 is a sports car. This vehicle is primarily for enjoying the road for the simple fun of the road. Though it can obviously be used for such, it was never really meant for simple transportation.
The 928 on the other hand is a GT- a car that is intended to be very fast transportation. You see, when the 928 was designed in the early 1970's, there was a recession on and the gas crisis was going as well. Since Ralph Nader was making noises in the United States [Porsche's largest market...] about vehicle safety and rear-engine layouts, Porsche decided to design a car to replace the 911 that would pass the toughest safety regulations [hence the Weissach rear axle], and appeal to the largest audience, by being something that could be sports car and transportation.
Really, the article indirectly stated the obvious, that the 928 is basically a ground-only Lear Jet while the 911 is a toy. Since this magazine is concerned primarily with toys...you get the idea.
["Toy" was not meant to be derogatory in this usage; just descriptive of the car's intended use~]
I mean, comparing 911's and 928's is essentially silly. It is a bit like comparing a screwdriver to a wrench-

This is a great magazine! The comparison was biased, but well written. The Dr. Fondle story was hillareous!
And I like the article on the 989 4-seater Porsches as well (something Excellence magazine should have done).
The pictures are the very same that were published in the German magazine "Motor Revue" in late '93. Only that the German magazine had a lot more of them...

Having both, I will say that Normy put is best. I am passionate about both cars, neither is "better" than the other, because they each do different things. Maybe like the difference between a Harley and a Ninja............

I'll consider the 928 the better car after an inexperienced 911 driver follows me too deep into a corner and lifts off the throttle.
Funny how all that shark technology is now in the 911, isn't it?

considering my experience to equally prepared 911s. I have to say, if you want to beat a stock 928, but race prepared, you better bring a GT3!!. a stock 996 wont have a chance aganst a 928S4 or better!! Of the 3 GT3 cars entered into Speed world challenge last season, The realtively stock 928S4 had a better time than all of them in Qualifiying. a stock/but race prepared 996 would have been at a huge disadvantage.
Now if we are comparing GT3's ( factory race cars) vs the joe blow off the street getting a S4 ready for the track, now we have a discussion. sure Ill take the GT3, but heck, its 15 years NEWER!!!

This is a good and respectable Porsche magazine.
The article was too benevolent with the 911. The only disadvantage for a 928 GT in front of a 911 3.2 is its weight.
From my point off view a 928 GT or GTS IS a sports car. The 911 can go with you the first few meters but you will disapear with your 928 once fourth speed is engaged leaving the 911 3.2 driver very frustrated. ;-)
The 911, on the other side is more fun on short trips or narrow roads with lots of corners.
Believe me, I know what im talking about. ;-)

Hey, finally got this Magazine. The car is almost identical to mine with all the GTS Upgrades - Except they put the steering wheel on the right ( wrong ) side.
Thought it was a good article, you can not really compare the two cars. Actually, I do not think the 911 is comparable until about 1997. However, I still chose a 928 even with that comparison.
The 911 has great attributes which just happen to be different than the great attributes of the 928.

I didn't really understand the "comparison" in the 911& P-car magazine as the conclusion was pre-decided.
It's fair to compare the experience, but the cars are completely different tools.
The 911's of the same era are dated technology. The 928 is designed to go fast, and with a V8 motor is of course heavier than the 911. But the way these guys write you'd swear it was 4000 lbs! It is in fact very light for all of the function that is there.
No the 928 is compact and lightweight and will travel at high speed with stability. From a design and engineering standpoint, from bumper to bumper it is a better car! No question.
They are writing to their loyal reader base and advertisers, and it's bulls---.

I bought the magazine today and would not even put the 911 in the same class as the 928. The 911 looks very outdated versus the 928 which still looks fresh. The 928 has significantly more horsepower and torque as well. As much as I like newer 911s, the 89 in the article looks borderline ugly to me. To each his own. I am very happy with my '89GT.

That is the trouble with opinions, they are like a$$holes, in that everyone has one, and if you are not careful expressing them, they attract them. You figure it out.....
