Rebuild at what mileage?

The 928 project I am going to be undertaking later this year has just over 200,000 miles on the clock. I am not sure whether or not this motor has been rebuilt before, but I'm wondering what the consensus is: should I do a full teardown on this motor?
The work I had been PLANNING to do was WP/belts/etc, but after seeing the mileage so high that changed. A WP job would be around $500 for parts; a rebuild would be over $2000.
Can original rings/bearings last over 200,000 miles?

Do a compression and leak down test that will let you know.
If the rest is leak free why tear into it.
I have an '86.5 with over 214,000 on it (the odo stopped at 214k sometime before I bought it) and it feels as strong as my other '86.5 that has a 100k on it.

Do the very minimum needed to get it running which may mean that it does NOT need a belt . That way you can find out IF you LIKE driving it and get some idea what else it needs. Those engines can often go 300,000 miles... Trust me there will be enough things which you MUST do.

I rebuilt a 79 motor w/ 131k miles due to a failed thermostat leading to a headgasket meltdown. The blocked literally looked brand new inside. Cross hatch pattern to all cylinder walls. I pulled the 2/6 rod bearings and they showed only slight wear so I replaced them all. Never needed to crack the block open. Everything else looked great. Did a head job only because they were off.
So yes, these motors will last longer than most relationships. Unless you have reason to believe there is a problem, just regasket it and run with it. But do a leakdown and compression check to be sure.

I think Roger works on a 86? that had over 600K miles on the original motor!!!
With simple maintenance 200K is very easy to do......compression and leak down should tell you the condition of the motor...also check the Thrust Bearing if its a 84+ MY automatic

I recently posed this question and 84 has a clip. Check this thread for TBF on MY 84.

What is the purpose of this exercise ? Are you buying the car ? just working on it ? just curious what is inside ? And who is paying for the parts ? I would highly recommend that you drive an early automatic 928 BEFORE you buy one and spend a lot of time and money fixing one because your 944 has nearly the same performance especially in the twisty bits.
