hot center consule
Hi All,
I took my shark to Yosemite this weekend. It was a perfect ride. Love being able to pass SUV's at will on mountain roads!!
This is the longest trip I've taken so far with the shark and I noticed that the center consule gets very hot after 3 hours on the freeway. The whole center consule gets warm but the ashtray area gets very hot, almost too hot to touch.
Just wanted to check with other shark owners. Is this normal or something to be concerned about?
It's a 1990 S4 with 92K on the odometer.
Thanks for your input!!
Jim

Automatic or 5-speed?
In either case, it sounds like the insulation block may not have been replaced during some previous repair work or your motor mounts have collapsed. That area should not get that hot.
Doing a search on 'insulation' got several threads, including this one:

I wanted to chime in here.
Two totally different thoughts:
You may want to check how hot your cats are. That may be causing excess heat in that area.
BUT:
I had an opportunity to drive with the side covers off on my 89 for a while when I was working on my vacuum situation quite a few weeks ago. I was checking the operation of all those solenoids that control the HVAC system.
Well...They get HOT! Those little square solenoids that control the vacuum pathways for the pods in the system get almost melting-plastic hot.
HTH.

Hmmm....I have a similar problem but mine is only noticeable when the sun roof is opened. The ashtray area gets hot but not so hot that you cant touch it. And this only occurrs when the sunroof is opened. This is on an 87 S4 Auto.

Hmm...seems like the same problem with my automatic. Most likely the motor mounts are shot.
If you open the sunroof it creats a vacuum for the hot air to come in. Best bet...close all windows and sunroof crank up the good ol' AC.
OR...do what I did...just buy a bunch of heat shields (got mine from VW junkyard) and somehow stick it right about the catalytic converter. It helped some and did narrow down the ash tray temperature from burning to warm.
Hope that helps.

Hmmm,
My console gets very hot..
My CD's are ready to melt after playing 7 or so tracks.
And today I noticed that my key and aluminum 'D' Ring -key chain-. was real hot. Ignition was not hot, nor was the key/D sitting in the sun.
Will check the ashtray.
I think I may have a Vac. leak again or possibly heater valve failure.
Delay on solving the problem as she heads for the body shop, AM tomorrow.

Hi All,
Thanks for all the input. Now that I recall, the ashtry was cooler when the sunroof was closed.
It looks like it's time for new motor mounts
. There goes the money I was saving for a RMB and new shocks. At least I'm doing my part to keep Zonker and Tuna well stocked with gourmet dog chow.
