Post ATF Level

I can get my ATF level perfect with the marks on the plastic reservoir - car at operating temperature, run through the gears, placed in Park, engine running. Transmission shifts properly when driving. But when the car is cool and the engine is off, the plastic reservoir is completely full and ATF will spill out if the cap is removed. Is this normal? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Sounds OK. My 85 does the same thing. Here's a recent thread that discussed this, too. They came to the same conclusion...but then had a bit of disagreement about checking the fluid level hot or cold. Either way, the engine has to be running.

Hey, Steve...just noticed this was you. Thanks again for the spanner wrench info.

Thanks Michael - looks like this has been covered pretty well. BTW - I found that a Briggs&Stratton lawnmower gas cap for a 4.5hp Quantum engine (availabel at Home Depot $5)is a pretty good fit on the ATF res. I bought one, took out the baffle, made a hole in it and attached the tubing on my hand siphon pump I use for ATF. Handy tool for mess-free filling and you don't have to remove the strainer and risk crud falling in.

I'm still nursing a second degree burn from tightening the cap with the engine warm.
