Look what I found in my oil pan...
Background -- I'm replacing a cylinder head after mine broke where the chain tensioner was attached. The tensioner was chewed up along with the cam teeth.
First of all, allow me to say that Hondabond (similar to Yamabond) is strong stuff. It took me 20 minutes to pry the oil pan off once all the bolts were removed. Very strong stuff, no leaks. I can't imagine getting the pan off with the engine in the car.
Anyway, I'm still hunting for a missing bolt from the chain tensioner. The pan itself feels like sand when I drag my finger along the bottom of the pan, and the magnet gets an instant afro from all the shavings. Here are pics of some of the bigger pieces...
Next I'll be pulling off the damage head to get a better look at what's still stuck out of sight. I'm also missing the tensioner's oil supply tube.

If you can believe I feel lucky at all, I'm actually feeling like I got off easy. The timing could have been distrupted so easily!

sure looks like the delrin pad took a ride down the sprocket highway!
and my sprockets lost teeth for no reason at all! I still have 2 of them floating around somewhere in the engine! of the 6-7 teeth total lost before i replace the cams with the 85S types.

Dave,
I want to know, what the hell is it that you have those peices sitting on. Its hard to pick out the bits fron that cow hide background. What is that? It looks like some linen colored cloth thats oil soaked in spots. But the spots are evenly spaced somewhat that it seems like its an animal hide or something.
What is that?

This after swapping oil pans & rod bearings.
How far down do you plan on tearing apart this motor?
