Default Look what I found in my oil pan...

Background -- I'm replacing a cylinder head after mine broke where the chain tensioner was attached. The tensioner was chewed up along with the cam teeth.

First of all, allow me to say that Hondabond (similar to Yamabond) is strong stuff. It took me 20 minutes to pry the oil pan off once all the bolts were removed. Very strong stuff, no leaks. I can't imagine getting the pan off with the engine in the car.

Anyway, I'm still hunting for a missing bolt from the chain tensioner. The pan itself feels like sand when I drag my finger along the bottom of the pan, and the magnet gets an instant afro from all the shavings. Here are pics of some of the bigger pieces...

Next I'll be pulling off the damage head to get a better look at what's still stuck out of sight. I'm also missing the tensioner's oil supply tube.

Yes, the bottom portion. When the head broke, the tensioner was turned sideways and chewed to hell. The two pieces pictured are the same piece. Looks like it just snapped off in the carnage.

If you can believe I feel lucky at all, I'm actually feeling like I got off easy. The timing could have been distrupted so easily!

How do you know it happened in that order? Just curious.

I don't, and can't, know for sure. The spike-shaped portion was the only part of the bottom pad that came off, and wasn't where the chain normally made contact. I'd post picture, but I donated the tensioner to the 928 Shrine last summer at SIH.

sure looks like the delrin pad took a ride down the sprocket highway!

and my sprockets lost teeth for no reason at all! I still have 2 of them floating around somewhere in the engine! of the 6-7 teeth total lost before i replace the cams with the 85S types.

Dave,

I want to know, what the hell is it that you have those peices sitting on. Its hard to pick out the bits fron that cow hide background. What is that? It looks like some linen colored cloth thats oil soaked in spots. But the spots are evenly spaced somewhat that it seems like its an animal hide or something.

What is that?

It's a hi-res photo of a paper towel.

I knew this wasn't going to be easy to watch, but I clicked on it anyway.

Man, that's some serious roughage.

Yeah, I suspect that, too. I'm planning on checking each one as best that I can. What are the chances that something like that could be recirculated through the engine?

Very good chance. I'm still finding "debris" in my oil filter from last June's oil pump failure
This after swapping oil pans & rod bearings.

How far down do you plan on tearing apart this motor?
