New record at the gas pump! (low fuel warning light? - RV)
Up until yesterday I had never put $50 of gas into any of my cars at one time. Filling up the 928 not until broke that barrier, we went into uncharted territory with a $66 fill up!
But my real question is - how much fuel should be left when the low fuel warning comes on? The tank capacity is 22.7 gallons and it only took 17.8 gallons to fill it. So was there really 5 gallons left in the tank? To the best of my knowledge the tank is intact - no dents of other deformities that would reduce the capacity. I'm guessing the sender on the tank is really to blame as my gauge has always read a little low. But I'm curious to hear from anyone else as to their experiences.

Bill,
I filled up with 20.5 gallons the other day. The gauge was near the empty line and no indicator lamp on. (But don't know if mine works.)
Yep, over $50, but I've been living in the UK for the last 4.5 years, so it was by no means a record - it was a good laugh. I pay over $8 a gallon here.
A buddy of mine flew to Las Cruces New Mexico with me, we gave her the once over and kept dumping in gas and burning it as fast as possible until we got to New Rochelle NY.
What a blast.

It was kind of funny actually - in the almost 10 years I've owned the car I've never seen the low fuel warning before. Not completely trusting the gauge I've always filled up before it got down to the red line. I wasn't even sure there was a low fuel warning and hadn't bothered checking the manual to see, and even then wouldn't have known whether the light still worked.
So yesterday I was on my way to fill it up - the gas station was actually in sight - when the ! warning came on. It took me a minute to realize the reason and notice the red light at the bottom of the gas gauge that I'd never seen before.
I guess it's time to go back and read the owner's manual again and see what else I've forgotten.

I've asked a similar question before as the gas tank doesn't seem to hold what the Owners manual indicates..........even after the 'heart attack' red light display comes on.
Then I learned the secret; if your fillling up and have the gas pump nozzle on full throttle its triggers flow stop long before the tank's full. Going to a more sedate flow rate allows much more fuel into the tank but the guage still only reads 3/4 full.
Last time I filled up; $70CDN and we're very close to par with the USD.

I put in almost 23 gallons once. I drove for some time with the light on - I was in Minnesota between Rochester and LaCrosse, and gas stations are sparse. You can go pretty far once the light comes on.
If you can't put more than about 16-17 gallons in, the tank vent could be obstructed, which prevents the baffle from going all the way to the top. I don't think there's 5+ gallons of reserve.

I have to pay twice to fill my FS Bronco. The first $75 takes it up to 22 gallons where the pump shuts off. Then I have to initiate another transaction to complete filling up.

Seriously? You can afford to race, but the $10 extra bucks to buy 10 gallons at $4 instead of $3 is something you can't swing?
