Default Transmission problems or something else?

Over the past two months, I seem to be having a problem with the car in the first 5 minutes of driving.

When taking off, it tends to rev and not really 'catch' - revs don't match the car speed.

Initially a bit more gas fixed this, but now if I do this it either revs higher or starts to surge down the road. It idles fine, and no past problems seem to have occurred with fuel.

Occasionally at an intersection it can be a bit hairy when you put your foot down to take off and not much happens.

The transmission oil levels are all ok.

It runs fine when the car has been driving for more than 5 minutes. Spending the first five minutes idling in the garage makes no difference to the problem, so wondering if it's something to do with the transmission?

The car is a 82 Euro model with an auto.

I am having a similar problem with my '85 Euro S - have you made any headway in diagnosing this since posting?

Have you tried servicing the transmission. There is a filter in the transmission under the pan that can get clogged up. My 190D Mercedes was acting the same way with some slippling. I serviced the transmission and drove the car for another 100K miles. Be sure to drain the torque converter and flush the cooler lines too.

problem solved - the new porsche service centre I took it to obviously didn't know how to check the fluid levels correctly - I took it to a guy who knows about 928's and the diagnosis was lack of fluid - now topped up and running 100% again

I think you've been given some faulty info.
Check when car on level ground, engine idling at normal operating temp, emergency brake set. Move gear selector through gears but return to neutral or park. Fill to top mark.

I agree. I got in a hurry when I was typing. The procedure is as described by DG84S. Since my previous post could lead some one astray, I am going to delete it.

I also had some tranny trouble about 2 weeks ago.

I had lost my first gear(auto) so went to a recomended specialist.
He added 1/2 liter of fluid and one block later everything was normal again.

Funny thing dought, he told me that low fluid would not cause the loss of just first, it would have other symptomes....What does he know!!!

Note to self : Low tranny fluid will cause uncommun symptomes...

I agree with Dan, from what I have read, the auto trannies are very fickle about having the proper amount of fluid.

Telidor, welcome to the board. As a general rule it is a good idea to put in a question what kind of car u have and auto/or 5speed so the board can help better, also the search is your friend

With that said, the short version is in this thread

Check when car on level ground, engine idling at normal operating temp, emergency brake set. Move gear selector through gears but return to neutral or park. Fill to top mark.
