Default Quick schoolin on 928 from a 944 guy

I'm thinking of coming over to the dark side. I've got two 944's and want to get a 928. Seems that the prices are ALL over the map on the 928. Can someone either point me to / or tell me (quick rundown of major components) the differences in the different 928 models? I did a search but comes up with PAGES of non related stuff. I also don't find many that were manual trannys. ?

928's are really cool, especially the SC'd ones - I will buy one eventually.

Just don't EVER EVER EVER question the 928 or point out any of it's flaws...............alot of owners here are really sensitive about their cars.........

The 928 has no flaws. Its the owners of 928's that have the flaws. I don't care to discuss those.

Haha, they all do - just don't question them on this particular board.

And yeah, the majority of them are auto - a shame really. I would love to have a supercharged 5-speed, you can make some serious power with this motor and forced induction.

Todd,

5 speeds are out there, you may have to look harder for them. Generally from what I've seen and read the 5 speeds are going to have more wear and tear for the miles, and also more miles on them. They're going to be the ones that were driven harder IMO and you may have a hard time finding one in really good condition unless it's priced really high.

The autos can be driven like a stick though, and you can probably find a few debates on 5 speed vs auto here if you look.

There is lots of information available online about the basic models like this:

928 info- wiki

If you're looking for a project, the 928 is a fun one with some MAJOR upsides. What other former 'supercar' can you get for such a reasonable price? If you do your homework and like to work on your car you can have a really nice example that will snap your neck and make you smile every time you drive it.

This forum is a major plus. I've learned a great deal in the past year here, and been able to work through some projects that I wouldn't have attempted without this group.

Good luck, and welcome to the dark side.

Good luck. There are a lot of them here in SC, but the nice ones don't sell often. I've seen many here in Santa Barbara but I rarely see them for sale. I ended up getting mine from a guy going to school in Santa Clarita, but the car was actually located in St. Louis. Early models are the most inexpensive, but be careful that you don't get one that needs major work because it will become very expensive very quickly. It's also my impression that 5 speeds are more common in the early years. But they were 16 valve engines until '86(?) when the 32 valve ones came out. If you want to find a good, local example for a good price, plan on taking a year or more to find it. My search radius was about 100 miles, and it took me 9 months - and it ended up being in St. Louis.

Big Thanks guys. I've got some reading ahead of me. (which is fine cuz I do NOTHING at work all day..LOL)

This isn't going to be a 'project' or track car.. just a daily driver to replace my 944's. (my two sons have dibs on my two 944's) Doesn't need to be a rocket either.. until I get bored and hook up a bottle on it.

Default Fast and dirty rundown

The prices ARE all over the place. depends on how much you want to do. Lots here to read. Nomenclature: OB (old bastds) '79 t0 '84 are less hp of course, have synchro issues, easier to work on, US 85-86 is in between, 32 valve, '87 up have more power and $$ for parts. You can get a decent $10K A/T '87 as a daily driver, might only need a timing belt/wpump replacement for $500 in parts. An '85/86 probably gets most out of a SC, but you are looking at $5K more to do that, they start with 288 hp, vs. 316 in an '87. GTS has 345. Feel the torque, you won't go back, you'll just want more.

I should mention that you should drive every example of a 928 that you can. Test drive every local eBay listing and every one in the Recycler or Trade Express, even if you have no prior intention of buying it. It's the only way you'll learn to recognize a gem when you see one.

Both good points. I've looked at the info given above and I think the 85-86 is where I'm looking. I've found a couple under $6k. I'm still going to test drive a couple as suggested. I just hate getting into a real nice one and then come back to earth with what I can afford. Too many toys, not enough toy money!
