Default Encouraging stories

I don't know about most others with 928 projects out there but I need some good "Lump of coal to diamond" stories for encouragement with mine before I decide to part them out. So post your photos and comments about your project here.

Well my 928 has a good story behind it.....the PO was unlucky enough to blow the timing belt on a 7 mile long bridge.....kept driving and ruined the engine....decided not to fix it and run......bad luck for him, good luck for me....in theory I bought the car from him for cheap & paid a pretty penny to repair just about everything to bring it back to 100% condition......with the right application of time and $$$$$ (depending on who turns wrenches) any 928 can be brought back to life

I briefly considered dumping mine after I discovered that the seized water pump had led to a blown head gasket. The PO did it, but then the car cost to me was zero, so I couldn't complain too much. However, being a '79, the valves were good and all else was repairable.

After a year and a half, EVERYTHING works! All systems gone thru and last summer I even entered our club concourse. I was the only car in my class, but still not embarrassed to enter. Fifteen years earlier it had won best in show.

Even though by today's standards these early 928s are pretty slow, it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. Never give up.

It's very simple, if you don't love the 928 on your own, get rid of it. If you want a diamond, you need money.

Asking for someone else to convince you to keep it is a waste of everyones's time.

That's encouraging!

Anyway, it all boils down if you like driving her. If so, keep learning and fix her.

I've had mine for 4 years. I've almost turned the corner from the lies the PO sold me...

I bought a 1990GT for $6000 about threee years ago. It was running and drove, but needed work. I put about $2500 in it over the next two years to get it running right, and fix a bunch of interior gaffes. It's still not perfect, but it's my daily driver. 928GT for used Toyota money.

It's simple, do you want to wrench or write checks? If you want to wrench, get started. If you want to write checks I think you should get out of the 928 market(or send the cars and checks my way).

Keith is right

For every story out there of a cheap 928 that runs forever.....there are 3 that looked great and ended up costing the new owner a fortune to drive.....even with proper maintainence its a roll of the dice.....remember you are talking about a complicated 20+ year old car.....

Even still.....928's aren't that expensive to own and drive.....mostly due to the minimal depreciation they have.....for example my brand new Acura is guaranteed to loose $20K in the next 4 years......I will 100% guarantee you I will not spend anywhere near that on the 928....& it will still be worth about (+/- 20%) what I paid for it! On the standard $200 a month I'm still $12K ahead...but the Acura needs some maintainence too....thats not calculated in!

If you really believed this was a waste of time, you should have not wasted your time replying. I applogize for wasting your band width.

I'm 7 bolts away from pulling my engine for the 2nd time....1st was a timing belt failure...this time it's a chain tensioner.

I can't fathom parting it out. I've turned just about every nut and bolt in the engine bay at some point. Hang in there!

While I hate not driving it, I actually enjoy wrenching. It's cheaper than therapy.

I am underway now, correct body apart paint, dash, pod, console, glove box, cassette etc will be redone, new carpet, seats are perfect just need cleaning, car only has 34k miles, then mechanicals will be gone through. I have spent a god awful amount of money with Mark Anderson, who has been totally unbelievable in providing all new seals, gaskets, lens, well almost everything to make it basically new. I sourced a new set of BBS RS's for her when she is done... I will post more pics of the process at it goes along.

If you enjoy the journey not just the destination saving a 928 can be a GREAT HOBBY . But like fishing you might spend thousands of dollars (boat tackle permits travel expense) to catch $10 worth of fish ! or beating a round white ball all over someone's pasture. If something about owning a 928 makes you smile......that is priceless !
