Default Thinkin' 'bout Blackin' out

The big ergonomic red tail lenses are starting to bother me. I think it's probably that red "PORSCHE" strip that bugs me the most. It's just too much. I know exactly I would do if I had an S4 rear, but I'm not giving that info away just yet

Since my car is colorless, the red is wrong. I have a picture from SF05 of my car and it appeared to have blacked out tail and rear side markers. I have been thinking for a while as to what to do with the rear end and this is my latest thought.

Blast me if you wish or let me know if you like it. I think I am going to make this change in the coming months.

(1st pic is at SF05 and the 2nd is photo chopped)

I was just thinking what a Black GTS would look like with only the center reflector smoked, or blacked out. Curious what that would look like. I like the GTS rear as it gains new lettering and model designation design. The S4/GT embossed "PORSCHE" looks really dated to me.

It will look really good. I like it except for the mesh/grille around plate.

The mesh might look better painted semi flat black and i would try adding a bit more blackout to the center so it has a thicker band that matches the width of the tail lights . Just my 2 cents

First of all I think those rims on a white car look awful, they'd look much better on a black car. :-)

I think the black out lights would look good now but what about in a year or two. Trends come and go. Is it reversable or will the lights be ruined once its done? I say go for it, you can always bring it back with some extra cash if you don't like it later.

The mesh still bothers me, sorry. It really cheapens the look of the back for me. You photochopped it bigger, right?

Just threw this together Stan. I thought about the black mesh, but I try to stay color keyed on things. I tend to think it looks out of place like the orignal black bumperettes, but thats just me. What do you mean when you say "try adding a bit more blackout to the center so it has a thicker band that matches the width of the tail lights"?

First of all I think those rims on a white car look awful, they'd look much better on a black car
They make them with black painted centers and that WOULD look awesome on a black car.

The painting of the tail lenses is completely reversible. I thought about the "fad" thing too. As can be seen with my cars, I tend to stay away from that stuff. However, blacked out lenses have been in style for quite some time and doesn't seem to be fading in the least. And, if you've noticed, there are many 928 Renn'rs screaming to black out tail lights constantly. I held back from it cause I too thought it a tad cheesy, but after seeing some $100K+ cars with this detail, I am thinking otherwise. I've always worked towards originality, so that is why I am thinking about this latest rendition.

I hate the bumperettes. Thats why I took them off. I put the mesh there just to cover the holes and never did anything beyond that. They need to be bigger as Louie proved. Of course there is different styles of mesh that can be used. I had thought about the Chromed wire mesh you see on new Jaguars and aftermarket grills for the Chrysler 300's. I just wasn't sold on that stuff.

Anyway, thanks for the responses and keep them coming!

You did get the reference of your wheels looking better on my car right?? As in giving them to me and getting new ones.....

I agree on the black out. I saw a Chrysler 300 that was all blacked out with lots of chrome and a nice grill and it looked sharp. If it is reversable, do it.

LOL..didn't get the "giving YOU the wheels" part, but caught the sarchastic poke. I can take it, thats why I dish it out

I do try to throw stuff out there for feedback just to get a general idea of what reactions will be present. It helps me to think more clearly in what I am trying to accomplish.

BTW, if it's any consolation, Jennifer has always disliked the mesh too.

Hey, there's me in the background of the first picture...

Anyway, I like the smoked look better than all red. But I'm undecided on whether I'd do the rear side marker smoked or white in your case.

I would leave the mesh in body color, or use something else in body color. No black in that area.

If you see the center band try to add some black to the top portion so it is a black stripe that is the same thickness ( Heigth) as the tail lights are, so you would in fact be painting with a semi flat black to the rear bumper this might not be reversable although you could try it with some wide elex tape, i think the mesh should be black or you could even try to color it like the wheels in a bright aluminum to match the wheels, white just doesnt do for me but its not my car, but thats why you asked,... I see what you're saying Stan (I think). Looks a bit too much like a 350ZX to me.

This is an inbetween version....

Nicole...you just want me to pick up a pair of clear rears from ya!

No, but think about it: I f you make them black, they really stand out. If you make them white they are less obvious.

Seeing the European 928s without the side markers, I really wish we would not have them. In fact, I consider them unnecessary on the S4 and later models, because the tail lights already wrap around the side. I wish Porsche would have discontinued them at that point.

Do the bumperettes really do anything? They barely protrude beyond the plane of the rearmost bit of the bumper cover. And they'll way too low to line up with any bumper I've come across.
Sorry for the hijack.
Back to "how to give that GTS rear a facelift."

yes thats what i was talking about whats missing from your photo is the rest of the car IE the top. if you had it backed out into the sun ,the back might seem to fit in a bit better. And what about the mesh type grill used on the front of the NEW supercharged Jaguars its made of SS and I think it might look good in the cutout and it might not be that hard to make
