Annual Oil Change? That's BS isn't it?

Default Annual Oil Change? That's BS isn't it?

When car companies (and oil companies) are advertising increasingly long mileage intervals between oil changes...and no mention is made of time intervals...why would anyone change the oil in their 928 annually if it's only driven a few thousand miles a year? It shouldn't deteriorate just sitting there. Annual oil changes under this circumstance doesn't make sense to me? Am I missing something?

Are you talking synthetic oil or any run-of-the-refinery variey?

My car is not driven in the winter months and its also not started.........Canadian weather. As such I change the oil and filter in the spring to rid it of any contaminants it may have from the 4-5 month hibernation.

I do the work myself, use synthetic oil and I buy filters in bulk from 1 of our preffered 928 suppliers.

Perhaps $90CDN once a year..........cheep ins. for the engine IMHO.

Either one that advertises extended miles between changes. I know some on this list have advocated changing out Mobil 1 each year and I would suspect synthetics may "hold up" longer than dino oils. Either way, what's important (and why)...mileage put on the oil or the time it sits in your crankcase unused?

Why and how would oil sitting in your crankcase being unused and in a closed environment, get contaminants? I'm not against changing oil every year, it just doesn't make sense to me.

I've kind of wondered about this myself. As I recall (but could be wrong) from Doug Hillary's oil reports, he recommended changing annually, even though his UOA's showed the oil to still be within spec.

I was always under the impression that as oil is used its properties change. In a Dino oil supposedly if the oil sits for long periods it can become acidic. This assumes the oil has some mileage on it of course.

I'm not sure if the same applies for synthetics. Anyone know?

The less you drive your car, the more water ends up in the oil from condensation -- this combines with contaminants to create a corrosive mix. Changing once per year is cheap insurance.

Contaminants are by-products of combustion. Some of them are what make your oil appear "dirty" after some miles. These contaminants can create corrosion producing compounds, but they are there whether you drive or not. Since I too am up here in the Great White North, I drain my oil at the end of the season and leave the car sit with fresh oil. I'm not sure that this is a better method, but it feels good to me.

I think that the 1 yr oil change recommendation is consistent with the average annual milage expectation, which is about 10,000 miles

No no no! Change the oil BEFORE you put it up for the winter, whether it's your Porsche, Ford, or John Deere. The reason is quite simple- some of the combustion byproducts in suspension/solution in the oil are corrosive, and you don't want them working on ANY metal surfaces for months at a time, undisturbed. Ask guys who have dismantled old engines about the "worm tracks" you sometimes find on main bearings. Put in clean oil before winter storage, please!

Point taken Martin but I should have mentioned I do late summer/fall change. the rational being the spring oil has had a hard summer from those who drive it as it should.

The point being to the original question, regardless of kilometers travelled the oil gets changed at least once if not twice a year and its garaged ~ Nov - Mar.

My tractors are a Universal 640, 4 cyl deisel, 4wd and a Sears 5000, V twin gas engine. Both are used all year, run on synthetic of correct viscosity and are changed once a year.

My truck, a 3/4 ton Chev, 6.6 Duramax diesel, 4wd farm truck, driven all year and oil/filter changed every 10k kms.

You're OK- I shouldn't have jumped the gun... That's what I do and I think it's the way to go (although only the little JD garden tractor and a JD 935 diesel front deck mower get laid up for the "winter" here in VA).

the 85 owners manual states to changes the ENGINE oil every 15000 or 12 months... yes fifteen thousand.
