I'm not sure why we need to do a comparision. Porsche recommends annually or 15K miles. How do you think they came up with this? Considering how conservative and engineering-driven Porsche is, I can't see why anyone would doubt this recommendation. The car holds over 8 qts of oil. That's twice as much as my Durango 5.2 liter. The 3K mile oil change stuff came from the oil companies and Jiffy Lube who have a vested interest in the matter.

What Wally said
"If you drive the car until the oil gets very warm,
the condensate will be mostly driven off."

Makes sense to me.

There are a couple of studies in the internet which seem to support longer times between oil changes.

Yes, this is true, but you can never burn off the contaminates in the oil. Those will stay. And the oil does get dirty over time, regardless of how good the oil is. Although it has been proven that a high quality synthetic oil can last far beyond the recommended change intervals (up to and beyond 60,000 miles), so can a clogged air filter. But that doesn't mean that we should leave a clogged air filter in the engine.

I change my fuel filter every two years, according to the manual. Does it really need it every two years? Probably not. But it does need to be changed like the rest of the filters & fluids and on a regular basis.

I've spent more money than I could ever sell my car for just on the engine.

9 quarts every March is the last expensie I'm going to worry about.

Draining my oil while filtering the through it + cutting apart my filter is the only way I can keep an eye on my motor from the inside. If you want to wait 5 years and a 10's of thousands of miles, be my guest. When you try to sell your car, don't come crying to us when nobody is making an offer on a 928 that is using the same oil from 2003.

If you drive the car until the oil gets very warm, the condensate will be mostly driven off. (Back in the day, some folks would tell you that their car never burned oil around town, but used oil on a trip. They were adding water to the oil on the short trips, then cooking it out on the first road trip...)

If you let the car sit for a few months, and don't crank the engine at all, a Fall oil change looks better. If you crank the engine for a few minutes every so often, perhaps a Spring oil change looks better.

As in everything in life, there are trade-offs...
Wally is as close to a 928 scientist there is in the 928 community, so I'll be going with what he suggests (except for using the kind of oil I know he prefers). Unless I were hitting the race track, I'm not sure I need the really expensive "designer" oils. If you're going to change oil often and not run your car on the track, why waste the money on designer, premium, no reasonable advantage oil? There's a lot of oil in the 928's oil pan to be changing out Redline, Mobil 1, etc. that often. I can't believe there's much of an advantage, except that I have a clackety lifter with Mobil 1 and I don't with non-synthetics. Oil, politics, and religion....controversial topics.

when talking about annual oil changes, does this also include filter change, or should that be done more freuently?

They usually recommend changing the filter along with the oil. Does it need to be changed that often? Probably not.

The filter on my car is $15, and it's right under the engine cover. I can change it in 5 minutes. Based on those reasons, it's a no-brainer for me. Other cars I've had are very difficult to change the filter, and since I was changing the oil every 3,000 miles and 6 months (non synthetic oil) and running them hard, I would skip the filter change and do it next time around (every 6,000 miles per year).

I change oil twice a year - Sept and March.
For the 81, which is my daily driver that was 4700 miles.
The 84 was only 900 miles, but I replaced the oil pan gasket.

I do it like clockwork every year. I've put 110K on the car in 7 years - pretty close to 15K/year. The car is at 180K miles now and runs like new. It doesn't burn any oil in daily driving.

I read the owners manual and maintenance guide the day I bought the car. I saw the oil capacity and the oil change recommendation, and it made sense to me. I drive the car regularly and I don't track race it. If I did otherwise, I might shorten the intervals, and the owners manual recommends more frequent changes for "severe" driving conditions.

I would think that putting a supercharger on your car would be a lot more than just severe service.

I change mine every 3,000, if I am wrong all it cost me is oil and a filter.

If the guys that are going 15,000 miles between changes are wrong, it might just cost them a bit more than oil and some filters.

BMW and Mercedes recomend the long intervals between changes and we have seen more than a few engines take a crap because of it. (mostly the BMW's)

The oil change interval is just one of the things I will be more than happy to be wrong about.
