I change my fuel filter every two years, according to the manual. Does it really need it every two years? Probably not. But it does need to be changed like the rest of the filters & fluids and on a regular basis.

I've spent more money than I could ever sell my car for just on the engine.
9 quarts every March is the last expensie I'm going to worry about.
Draining my oil while filtering the through it + cutting apart my filter is the only way I can keep an eye on my motor from the inside. If you want to wait 5 years and a 10's of thousands of miles, be my guest. When you try to sell your car, don't come crying to us when nobody is making an offer on a 928 that is using the same oil from 2003.

The filter on my car is $15, and it's right under the engine cover. I can change it in 5 minutes. Based on those reasons, it's a no-brainer for me. Other cars I've had are very difficult to change the filter, and since I was changing the oil every 3,000 miles and 6 months (non synthetic oil) and running them hard, I would skip the filter change and do it next time around (every 6,000 miles per year).

I change oil twice a year - Sept and March.
For the 81, which is my daily driver that was 4700 miles.
The 84 was only 900 miles, but I replaced the oil pan gasket.

I would think that putting a supercharger on your car would be a lot more than just severe service.
I change mine every 3,000, if I am wrong all it cost me is oil and a filter.
If the guys that are going 15,000 miles between changes are wrong, it might just cost them a bit more than oil and some filters.
BMW and Mercedes recomend the long intervals between changes and we have seen more than a few engines take a crap because of it. (mostly the BMW's)
The oil change interval is just one of the things I will be more than happy to be wrong about.
