Sears, Home Depot?

If it's the same size as the VW tranny plugs then VW dealers sell a big hex key that might work.

I found a set at Kragen. Comes in a package of 3 hex sockets, one of which is 17mm.

Fly Navy... what? 3/8 or 1/2 in. drive?

6 point or 12 point? Deep socket ?

Surely between you and Richmond there ought to be one.

You're near Williamsburg... go out to the 'museum'
and have Pete Ross forge you one.

Good luck.

Performance Tool in MI sells them for about $15. Needed on for wheel bearings on both my 200 and A6. Also does the oil fill plug on a ZF 5HP26 trans.

If this is for the drain on a manual transmission - buy this one:

hacker is right about this.
if that plug f's up while you're trying to get it out then....yikes.
get a good tool that won't strip the bolt.

also,an insider joke is it, to not start to take the drain plug out first.

CD: You have a strange sense of humor.

You really should explain that insiders know you must relieve the internal pressure by opening the fill plug first. Otherwise it will spray 360 degrees and miss the catch pan. Jeees.

I got one a couple of months ago from an online retailer - can't remember who.

But it is a standard tool for VW/Audi. Packaging says:

AST 6500-17
17mm allen for Passats since 1998, Audi A6 1999-2004, 02-05A4: Front and rear axle bolt (AWD).

I think it cost me about $50.

You can also use a bolt and double lock two nuts on it.
