Thanks Carl -- I may be coming across as a bit of a devil's advocate here, but I'm not trying to pick on you. I think it's great, the effort you are putting into moving the "state of the art" forward. As a tinkerer/gearhead, I just tend to ask questions when I see something that I don't necessarily understand, e.g. the circlip question above.

Just consider how unique it is to be able to talk to the parts manufacturer/developer while they are designing the part for your car - its a pretty incredible thing if you think about it.
I wish I could have talked to the VW engineers as they were designing my wife's car - I would've asked them why there is not friggen way to check the auto transmission fluid level nor way to add auto trans fluid to the thing!

170k so far and no trans change or filter. its like the Slick50 delema...
You do it because you need it then it fails....was it the "doing it" that did it in or the fact that it needed some "doing"....
Anyone need some aspirin?
Sharp ARMs thier Carl.....and a great price! of course any cheaper and it would be "Irrennlistable" to pass up!

I think it is not so clear...."....alot of transmitions fail right after a fluid change, (so i hear from some mecs) .... Often the transmission starts to act up a bit then the owner has the fluid /filter changed in the HOPE that that will "fix it" .....denial is a human trait. The Mechanic just sees that the fluid was changed and then the trans is bad because the owner of the car is usually not going to tell the mechanic that he thinks the transmission is failing, that is like blood in the water !!!

I think some bullitins are created to prevent bad mechanics from making an ok situation worse. Friend of mine has a new car with a CVT tranmisson. Took it to a local fluid change service, they put in the wrong stuff "it said transmission fluid on the bottle". Transmission locked up the next day.
Ford replaced the trans, now they are suing the fluid change place.
My favorite is the Porsche bullitin that states the chain / tensioner system in the 944S head (same as the 32V 928) is not a wear item. Well 6 months after asking the dealer to change this (they refused) it broke.
