Default Emissions?

Just had the GTS tested for state emissions. 2 years ago the car passed with flying colors. It had 55k miles at the time and had 34 HC out of a max of 112. This past Tuesday I tested the car at the same facility on the same machine and it had 111 out of 112. It passed but barely.. The car know has 61k miles on it.

I was thinking it might be lack of use but my 93 C2 with 47k miles was just tested on the same machine and it registered only 1 HC and 10 ppm of CO.

I was curious if anyone has experienced change like this and what would it be from? I drive the car at least twice a week and it gets a good run otherwise I don't bother driving it. I am not shy with the revs and believe in using all the engine was designed for. So I don't think it is carbon due to lugging the engine around.

Any thoughts?

Anthony,

I put about the same number of miles on my 87 S4 in the last two years as you put on your GTS, and there was no change in the smog test I had done about a month ago.

My 1995 GTS passed last year and failed this year (here in England ). It turned out to be an O2 sensor gone bad. While waiting for the part to arrive from Germany I instructed the Porsche dealer to disconnect the air-pump (as suggested to me) and the car then passed the test! Probably should have ordered the sensor from the States: cheaper and faster no doubt. Next time... In short get the sensor checked out. Good luck!

I was thinking O2 Sensor but figured I would see if anyone had another opinion. I will check it out.

Thanks

I had a car with O2 sensor disconnected accidentally by a tailpipe drop. It ran worse every day, and then started running better. Massive torque but huge power loss at the top end ....
