Question Tips on painting aftermarket rear end lettering?

I have a variety of lettering that I'm going to paint and "tatoo" on the rear end of my S4...from stuff I got from Nicole to the stylized S from the Cayman. I'd like to get a nice durable, gloss red on the S (it's silver now...and my car is silver). Any BTDT suggestions?

Also, what adhesive did you use that doesn't make the letter stand out from the car? I'm thinking that the regular double-sided auto trim tape is too thick?

thanks,

Harvey

Can't offer any suggestions on the adhesive, but I've been very happy with the Testors model paints (used it on my tail light lenses). You can even get it in Guards Red! I would give it a few coats in color per the lable instructions, then hit it with a good quality clear coat.

Edit: You might need to scuff up the surface and use a primer to get good adhesion.

I have used a 3M double sided automotive tape (tape is dark gray/black with a red peel off backing). Cut strips with a razor blade and stick it to the back of the lettering in such a way that you will not be able to see it when stuck to the car. Peel the backing and stick it to the car. Pretty simple process, key is to get things evenly spaced and level.

You might consider taking the Cayman S to a sign maker or other business that makes stickers and decals. Tell them what the application is for, and they should be able to reproduce the S on a sticker type thing, and then its simply a matter of peeling and sticking.

Harv, the paint on the lettering is very fragile and will bubble as you spray. Mine did. So I ended up HAVING to remove the original paint. Messy. I recommend you use paint thinner CAREFULLY to remove existing paint first with a towel, and then once completely dry, just spray paint.

had mine done by a pinstriper guy who made a design on a computer, printed it on special paper, then painted inside the template. turned out pretty well, but kinda like a tattoo - once it's there, it's there for life, so ya gotta be SURE you really want it. at least our cars don't wrinkle w/age

sometimes I wish I hadn't done anything though - lots of hot rodders try to pick street races w/me when they see the badging, as if I needed any friggin encouragment to be stupid...
