Default Hirschman Antenna Replacement

I accidentally broke off the antenna mast

Did a search on antenna replacement. The concensus was to go with a Hirschman replacement unit that can be easily bought off Ebay (see pic below). The previous threads mention the Hisrchman functions well. However, there is also mention of something to the effect to some poor fit of the unit to the fender.

Do anyone have any pics of their Hirschman unit installed on a 928 fender? Any feedback is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I hnave the old cast alloy case on mine. Replaced the mast by itself - just need to know rough or smooth inner nylon type when buying. Fits fine. Only irritation is its the ONLY piece of chrome on the car!

ACG:

I replaced the old unit with the eBay unit and it works quite well. What's deceiving about the setup is that the new unit is significantly smaller and lighter than the old unit. (Weight savings!) The bendable metal strip suffices in supporting it, along with the washers and bolts at the antenna hole at the top of the fender. The eBay antenna has some angle adjustment pieces that you will need to experiment with at the junction there in the fender.

Once you get the back right wheel off, you'll have a clear crack at everything.

I do have a pic of the final install - I sent it to the eBay guy! Once I get to our other computer, I'll see if I can post it for you.

Default Found the pic - hope it helps

Note the available bolt, to which the bendable metal strip attaches. Provides sufficient support.

I did this setup on my 79, worked out well. I ended up pulling out the rear quarter panel on the driver side (interior)to make wire attachments. I could not get the wires to come out all the way through the grommets and wanted to be thorough. I think you can do it without going to that xtreme! Just use good waterproof connectors as water will make it's way past the fender insert for sure!

You'll also want to make minor adjustments once you get it all bolted in to make sure your mast is not listing inboard or outboard. I think I've got mine tilted slightly back as well. The button that shows on your fender is slightly different so you may need to polish off any of the old gasket that will remain on your paint. I think I used some rubbing compound to get the black marks off so it wouldn't show. You'll be good for another 20plus years!

Have fun!

I just installed a Hirschman antenna (got it on ebay too) on my 78' when I did the new sound system last month. Works great extends only when using AM/FM and retracks when not in use or am using any of my other setups like Satellite, CD, Ipod or the Aux input.

The only problem was that the PO had replaced the original antenna with some Pep Boy's universal antenna and to make it fit opened the opening to make it fit. Not a big deal but it made fitting the new Hirschman a bit of a pain. But once fitted (& a little silicone to seal it) it looks great!

I'll try to take some pics tonight.
