I thought that a Mid 80's and beyond it's really hard to roll back the Odm, is that true?

In '89 they came out with a digital dash that has a digital odometer making it harder to tamper with.

The speedo is real easy to roll wherever you want it to be.
That is on cars up to the digital 89+.
I have replaced a few odometer gears and noticed that they can be reset very easy.
I would not trust any pre 89 mileage unless it can be backed up by facts.

Just recently I supplied a used speedo for an 82 car in New Zealand.
The customer asked me if you could reset the mileage to 177,000 - I did in less than a miniute once the odogear was out.

Service records really help in documenting mileage. My car has been in and out of the shop so many times over its life the mileage is guaranteed.

The interior appears tired for a 35K miles car.
The front seats have been replaced and you don't see that very often on a low mileage car.

IMHO reversing the ODOmeter is not a trivial task. Not on the mechanical ones and not on the digi-dash. The mechanical one has a mechanism that will not turn in reverse direction. If anyone wants to reverse it requires taking the mechanism apart completely I think. Forward spinning would be possible however. Most likely the tach has been replaced to adding the two readings to 95k seems a good approach to me.
The Digi-dash has a flash-alike memory device. It takes in-circuit reprogramming. It seems that people clip a programmer on the chip and do this. Hard to prevent.

So take the safe approach and add up counters. I'd try to stay away from cars like these..... unless it is documented and verifyable that a lower mileage instrument has been fitted. No point in lying about it if there's nothing to hide... I'd keep a written statement from the supplier and the invoice and hand it over to a buyer.

Had a similar situation when buying my current car. Luckily it was documented in the manual with a dealer stamp at the time the new odometer was installed. Ask the seller why the discrepancy and if he/she has documentation to support the change.

Records and overall vehicle condition are also very important. A really good condition car should bring in more $$ regardless of mileage. A PPI should also be done to verify it's mechanical condition.

Off for an inspection this morning and to have a good hard look at the records. Besides the normal stuff, seat /carpet wear, signs of paintwork, leaks etc. I'm ALL EARS for telltale signs of mileage. Thoughts guys?
Oh, I did track down the mechanic who had good things to say about the car. He thought it was a low mileage car, but only knew it since 2000. Odo 'discrepency' was in '98. I bet the seller contacted the mechanic to ask about mileage, got the answer he wanted and didn't bother disclosing odo discrepency in ebay add.. Unfortunate. However, a lot of calls for service records and i can't prove/disprove any mileage issues yet. The only thing I've go is an inspection.

If the car does what you want it to, buy it . If your buying it to resell it, buy it, if your buying it to keep it, buy it . If the PPI is in order A nice car doesnt have to have LO milage. Usually a nice car has many owners with lots of opportunities for each and every one of them to spend more cash fixing the little things that all add up. Goodluck with your new car

Austin, you start a story and didn't finish it... So what was the result of your inspection? Did you get the car or was the odometer rolledback?

He did get the car. Pretty sure that was NOT correct mileage for the car. The engine is out now (TBF...which also points to WAY more miles than disclosed) and being repaired slowly by the owner. Pretty nice car over all though I must say.
